Considering it's been on the news on TV, yes they are widely known. I've been hearing about it all day, and not just online. And even online, it's not just 'here and there'...

I watch the news/read the paper and it's hardly been mentioned anywhere (at all that I recall) - so yes my personal experience is indicating it's not widely known in my country.
