...were the people who are boycotting actually gonna go to the event? Or were they going to not-go anyway? Because I cannot see much of a boycott happening. Outside of mentions on the internet here and there, the LGBT issues in Russia don't seem widely known

They've become widely known. I don't know about boycotting, but in some countries citizens are protesting to let their governments know that they want their country to take an official stance against what's happening and withdraw from the Olympics or force the IOC to move them out of Russia.

That's good to hear, I guess my main concern would be people not hearing about it/realising there is a boycott or that they'd hear and not care because sports (going off what I've seen of Football and convictions of rape)

Considering it's been on the news on TV, yes they are widely known. I've been hearing about it all day, and not just online. And even online, it's not just 'here and there'...

I watch the news/read the paper and it's hardly been mentioned anywhere (at all that I recall) - so yes my personal experience is indicating it's not widely known in my country.
