I fail to see where I'm tin-hatting or trolling.

Sports is a cancer.

Really? You can't see how that would be viewed as a trolling statement?

That or

It's one of the most heavily sponsored sporting events in the world, dominated largely by white people

It's the whole thing. It's trollerific.

Honestly, at first I thought it was satire. Then I couldn't figure out if it was a troll or an idealistic college kid who took Philosophy Class the wrong way.

I doubt he's trolling thb because this all seems pretty much in line with things he's said in the past.

That's because it is. Maybe it's an elitist, ivory tower rant but I do not approve of society's worship of physical ability. So you can hit a ball with a stick, good for you -- why should anyone care? If you want to show off your physical ability then build something, perhaps a library.

Yeah, you're trolling. And that's a kind assumption I'm making of you. The other is that you're a complete asshole.

People enjoy sports, competing in them, watching them. That's enough to justify their existence. Go shit up a tree if you can't handle people liking things you don't like.

I don't have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is being asked to pay tax dollars for it. What I have a problem with is its sheer pervasiveness in our culture.

Getting together with friends to toss a ball around is fine. Nothing wrong with that. Organized, commercialized, idolized, fetishized sports are a cancer. We hates them, Precioussss.

Although having said that, the Olympics tends to include some of the few sports I actually do enjoy watching (chiefly those like figure skating that are as much art as sport.) I don't get why they require a lavish new stadium every time they come around, though, except maybe if some host countries don't already have enough large athletic facilities to accommodate them (is there any real reason in this age of instant tellecommunications why they have to take place in just *one* city anyway?)

I don't believe you're trolling because i know some people do hold this sort of opinion serisously.

Why do people care about sports? Because it's a challenge to the human body. Much like math and music is a challenge to the human mind. It's not just about hitting a ball with a stick, much like being a musician isn't just plucking a string with your fingers.

Sports show the ways people can push and challenge themselves. The Olympics is basically just a show for it. It's not perfect, obviously, but it's not something horrific.

Strong opinions are trolling now? I think sports is a huge drain on society that gives very little of value in return. Is that not a good description of cancer?

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

[personal profile] mekkio 2013-08-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. That's not what cancer is at all.

Also, you making a huge generalization of sports. Sports is the Superbowl but it's also the weekend games of baseball in some lot by the neighborhood kids or make-shift games of kickball by kids who are too poor to buy a proper ball, so they wadded up newspaper and used that. Sports is for everyone. Not just for the rich.

And not everyone should have to pay for it. Don't ask me to spend tax dollars just so a bunch of dudes can hit sticks with balls.

I hate war. Can I not pay for tanks? I don't have or want kids. Can my property taxes not go to schools? Art means nothing to me. Can my tax dollars skip the National Endowment to the Arts?

The answer to all of that is a resounding No. Sports is no different.

What's the drain on society? I'm genuinely curious because while I don't like or care about sports, I can't think of anything about them that is a drain on society.

I also think there are immeasurable factors you're overlooking, such as people who get enjoyment from watching sporting matches and events.

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

[personal profile] dethtoll 2013-08-13 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Let me put it this way: when you're building not one, but two stadiums, costing $454 million dollars, where's that money going to come from?

I'll tell you: Taxpayers.

Where could that money have been better spent? On things like repairing infrastructure (including/especially the Brent Spence Bridge which is deeply in need of replacement) and improving schools. Instead it's going towards a pair of mediocre teams who didn't need two stadiums to win the AFC championship and two World Series.

That link doesn't work even though I have a WSJ digital subscription. Do you have the article title and publication date by any chance?

Thank you! I found it in the advanced search and it still won't open for me so I tried a couple random old articles and none of them work, either. I thought maybe if I clicked the article from on their site it might help, but nope. I saved the link because I find that stuff fascinating. I'm off to contact customer support because I am just not getting along with their site today :/

That's a specific problem with sports that can be reformed, not an indictment of sports in general, which is the check you were trying to cash in the OP

Can, but won't, won't ever, because we have become an anti-intellectual society in the hopes of preserving false notions of manhood and physical skill is valued over mental.
