Dude, adjust your tin hat.

That or you just made trolling an art form. And if that's the case, bravo.

I fail to see where I'm tin-hatting or trolling.

Sports is a cancer.

Really? You can't see how that would be viewed as a trolling statement?

That or

It's one of the most heavily sponsored sporting events in the world, dominated largely by white people

It's the whole thing. It's trollerific.

Honestly, at first I thought it was satire. Then I couldn't figure out if it was a troll or an idealistic college kid who took Philosophy Class the wrong way.

I doubt he's trolling thb because this all seems pretty much in line with things he's said in the past.

That's because it is. Maybe it's an elitist, ivory tower rant but I do not approve of society's worship of physical ability. So you can hit a ball with a stick, good for you -- why should anyone care? If you want to show off your physical ability then build something, perhaps a library.

Strong opinions are trolling now? I think sports is a huge drain on society that gives very little of value in return. Is that not a good description of cancer?

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

[personal profile] mekkio 2013-08-12 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. That's not what cancer is at all.

Also, you making a huge generalization of sports. Sports is the Superbowl but it's also the weekend games of baseball in some lot by the neighborhood kids or make-shift games of kickball by kids who are too poor to buy a proper ball, so they wadded up newspaper and used that. Sports is for everyone. Not just for the rich.

And not everyone should have to pay for it. Don't ask me to spend tax dollars just so a bunch of dudes can hit sticks with balls.

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the drain on society? I'm genuinely curious because while I don't like or care about sports, I can't think of anything about them that is a drain on society.

I also think there are immeasurable factors you're overlooking, such as people who get enjoyment from watching sporting matches and events.

Uh...you do know that Russia is in fact arresting and attacking gay people right? And it goes against what the Olympics is all about by providing revenue by allowing Russia to host.

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

Then let us agree to disagree.

Because to me sports is one of those universal things that anyone can do. Yes, you have the big oevents like the Superbowl but you have the neighborhood games of touch football or soccer where anyone who wants to can join in. But according to dethtoll, everything about sports is a cancer.

Sports isn't bad in itself, though. There's a difference between criticizing elements of the economics of sports, and going from there and saying that professional / top level sport is worthless and no one should pay attention to it.

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

[personal profile] thene 2013-08-12 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
If we were only paying attention that would be fine; the problem is how much money top level is absorbing from us, much of it non-voluntarily through mechanisms such as corporate welfare, university budgets (ie. ballooning tuition fees) and mainlining payments from cable subscribers who do not watch sports.

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-12 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This is mostly a clarification of the big long post I wrote downthread, because I probably could have made my point clearer there.

I think things like corporate welfare, NCAA athletic budgets, and cable bundling are the aberrations, not the norm. The way I look at it, these things are economic phenomena floating on the wave of the massive popularity of and money in sports, not the cause of it. And so talking about those things isn't an criticism of sports in itself, it's an argument for reforming sports, one which is completely compatible with keeping professional top-level sports around, and one which many sports fans would be in total agreement with (for instance, see Patrik Hruby at Sports On Earth, who's written a ton of great pieces about the economics of sports, especially in the context of the NCAA and cable bundling).

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I find sports economics very troubling, but I don't think it's a good idea to introduce them into a discussion of boycotting the Olympics over Russia's disgusting anti-LGBT policies. Because if we're all boycotting all sports anyway, why would this motivate Russia to change said disgusting policies?

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

[personal profile] thene 2013-08-13 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Because it's not an either/or thing? I heard we area also boycotting Russian vodka, and we can do that while also questioning the culture of the alcohol industry as a whole. Anyway, Russia has already thrown down the money and will now be trying to recoup as much of their investments as possible, and hopefully they will fail even more spectacularly than most Olympic host nations do.

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
But if you bring up the economy of sports, all you get will be an argument about the economy of sports, because people REALLY REALLY REALLY like their sports. It's like we're talking about fast food worker unionization and we switch to whether it should be legal to manipulate people into buying such incredibly unhealthy food. Suddenly no one is thinking about the people who are just trying to make a living wage, because you are threatening to take away their Big Macs. It's not a very good strategy.

Anyway, Russia has already thrown down the money and will now be trying to recoup as much of their investments as possible, and hopefully they will fail even more spectacularly than most Olympic host nations do.

I don't get it. Is the point to prompt Russia to change, or punish it for being crappy?

Re: What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
They're not trying to recoup their investments. The relevant stakeholders already recouped their investments, when Putin channeled the flow of all the construction and investment to cronies who were blatantly embezzling it.

A ton of the discussion of the economics of the Olympics has relatively little to do with sport.
