No idea if it was intentional or not but LOL that this is secret #13 (should be secret #15 you do know that right? *trolling* )

As to the secret itself I only have theories and saying them out loud sounds *scary fan* even to me so nope nope not even gonna :D

Super junior has 13 members, but one of their subunits had two different members who only appear in said subunit- so if you include them, there're 15. It's just a coincidence.

A bit more context for why the 13 vs. 15 comment was a trolling-type joke:

Around the time the subunit in question was created, there was ~drama in the fandom b/c some of the fans were dead-set against expanding the group. They adopted the catchphrase "Only 13," which then got applied to these fans themselves as an identifier.

I think at least one of the new subunit members, Henry Lau, was actually intended to be part of the main group; Lau's Taiwanese Canadian, and hence could have been intended to help capture the overseas market. However, the backlash was so vicious (Only13 fans protesting outside the record label's offices, booing Lau every time he appeared onstage with Super Junior, sending him hate mail and death threats) that the record label dropped that idea and made Lau and another new member part of the subunit without officially inducting them into Super Junior.

...oh my fucking gods.

The whole realm of k-pop is like some twisted alternative universe where everyone is batshit fucking insane.

Eh, not everyone. I was pretty heavily into k-pop, including Super Junior, for a couple of years, and I was friends with a number of k-pop fans who were perfectly lovely people.

Otoh, I do think that the self-entitled, bullying portion of k-pop fandom is larger than that of most RPF fandoms, and that those fans tend to be very extreme and very vocal.

most RPF fandoms

Oh, I should've said "most music fandoms"; I wasn't really thinking about the meaning of the acronym when I used it. (I was in k-pop for the music and the fic about equally, but of course that's not true for most of its fans.)

Knowing my theories won't really answer the OP's question/secret, which I believe has many different correct answers. Everybody will have their own reasons for being concerned about loyalty NOW, when it didn't seem to be an issue previously.

One of my theories boils down to it's all SM Entertainment's fault (both ex CEO Lee Soo Man and the current CEO have contributed to the warring between fandoms on it's own label). Elaboration below.

I am an ELF and I know the reputation associated with us. I really don't feel like getting dogpiled on for liking what I like and for being willing to verbally defend the members of Super Junior against personal attacks/bashing. If someone simply doesn't like one or more members that's their business and I'd rather not hear about it/read it. I have already formed my own opinions on each member. None of them are perfect and that appeals to me.

I'm open to learning about artists other people love but if I decide it's not for me I don't want to be pressured otherwise. If I already love an artist I don't want someone pressuring me to hate them instead, either. I proudly declare I am an ELF but I'm not out to persuade anyone to also be an ELF. Only Super Junior can persuade anyone, either way.

I'm not a fan of that other 5< member male group under SM. I don't hate them. I wish them well (but not as much success as SJ, reasons below). I am loyal to Super Junior because I want to be.

My concern with mass numbers of ELF abandoning Super Junior in favor of the younger group is that the SM powers that be, will use it against Super Junior and against ELF e.g. one of the higher ups at SM [paraphrase] "once SuJu disbands [other group]'s fandom name will become ELF instead"

I find that offensive. I never felt that SM was offering fans two awesome 5+ member groups; I always felt like it was an either/or with coercion towards choosing the younger one so they could get rid of their "accidentally successful bottom of the barrel thrown together last minute LEFTOVERS that didn't fit into any other groups" group of ... imperfect people, in favor of the "higher quality" younger group (who for me, just don't have the same charm, charisma, determination, relatable flaws, etc, as their sunbaes do).

It seems to me that SM is trying to repeat a "happy accident", only they think they improved upon the elements this time. Like it's some sort of money making formula only better this time because they did it on purpose. I don't want it to work. Not necesarily fail, I just want them to not outdo Super Junior EVER and have SM twist in the wind over it "Wae? Large group check.Young check. Aesthetically pleasing check. Well trained check. Why no worky? Release 50 more teasers?".

The intention behind Super Junior was that they'd be a rotational group (likely in part because SM felt they were lacking anyway but wanted some kickback for having invested in & trained them). Fan pressure kept them from rotating members out/adding new members but SM has never been happy about it and have consistently downplayed any achievements Super Junior have reached. SM keeps Super Junior for the $$ they generate which from where I'm sitting is then used to overpromote/overbrag about the two groups they do like.

Disclaimer: theories are not facts but I have based mine upon compiled information I've accumulated in the last few years just by being interested in all things Super Junior (interviews, variety shows, articles, fandom talk, personal observation, random things members have said on social media, etc.) Also, I told you *scary fan* sounding. Oh woe, conspiracies abound! Of course I know how it sounds. So glad this is anon.

I'm proud to be ELF but not so proud of my paranoid thoughts about and bitterness I feel toward, SM. This is the first and hopefully last time I publicly air my thoughts about it. I'd rather just concentrate on liking what I like. For me it's not a phase. Before K-Pop I was mostly into western hard rock/metal music. I still like hard rock/metal music and now I also like K-Pop .. omg it's a growth, lol. I've just expanded my list of likes; it's not something I will someday not like anymore, is what I'm trying to say. As an added bonus, K-Pop has also inspired me to want to learn Korean (progress is slow but I know more than I did a couple of years ago.).

"Why no worky"? Are you fucking serious?

Did you miss the part where I said that is what I want to happen (in the long run)? I know it's not looking like things will go how I want, hence my bitterness toward SM.

I want SM to be wrong about their "improved formula" and for Super Junior to continue to be the phenomenal accidental success that they can never quite figure out why it worked. SM had predicted Super Junior would fail. I guess I should be glad that they were at least wrong about that.

Well, I wanted you to notice the ridiculous racist caricature you painted there, so I guess it's just disappointment all around.

you're right I didn't even realise it until you pointed it out. I wasn't thinking it in a Korean headvoice at all, more in a "duh!" Homer Simpson mentality way but I can see now how it looks. I apologise for my ignorance/obliviousness. If I could edit that I would.

...this is so goddamn fucking crazy that I don't even...

And this bizarre shit about "it's not a phase" just makes it worse.

YOU ARE RIDICULOUS AND CRAZY. You are overly invested in a musical group and no amount of justification is going to make you not look like a fucking nutter. It's one thing to develop fan theories; it's another thing entirely to develop theories about actual fucking people.

You wanna just "like what you like?" Get out of this fucking headgame and enjoy the goddamn music. If you can't enjoy the music without involving yourself in the sort of lunacy that leads to people being harassed and attacked (because this is EXACTLY it), then it's not the music that you enjoy. It's the fucking drama and the feeling like you've Done Something because you've researched Lots of Unimportant Things About Mass-Produced Media.

You seem pressed over my choices. I'm a real person. I admit to being ridiculous and I do have a diagnosed mental illness. I'm super glad you have zero say over how I choose to experience music, K-Pop, fandom or anything else. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's great. Why don't you take that smug attitude and indulge it over a nice hot bowl of Actual People Whose Lives Have Been Destroyed by Shits Like You?

I've never actively said or done anything against any K-Pop group. I'm not an Only13er. Henry Lau is the second reason I became an ELF. I don't like the fandom wars. I don't like the spreading of hate. I don't like seeing bashing of the groups. They all work hard.

I'm angry at SM Entertainment. My perception of that company has worsened over time. I'm allowed to be angry and have an opinion, whether or not it is misinformed (and I do concede it may well be). However, it's an opinion that only SM Entertainment can alter. If other people don't share my anger or poor opinion of that company, I'm not out to convince them.

All I did was share my thoughts about the root of the loyalty issues - ONCE. On f!s. I'm not calling for anyone to be hateful to anyone else. I certainly do not condone actions by any fan/fandom that as you say destroy people's lives.

Take your aggressive misplaced accusations and shove them.
