I don't think I'm ever going to be life-stable to get a dog (renting, no car by choice)...but I think I'm going to get one next year after settled in my new job.

I don't know the situations of your life in general

but neither of those things you've mentioned mean that your life is not stable, or that you shouldn't be able to have a dog. it is okay to be renting.

Most people seem to be of the general consensus that you should only get a dog if you're owning or got a car :( I guess because real estate companies are assholes and cars for emergencies? But then I look around me and nearly everyone I know has a dog and I really really want a dog.

I am not an expert on this topic so please don't take my word as gospel. I just know that I live in a city where relatively few people own cars, a ton of people rent, and there's lots and lots and lots of dogs who their owners really, really care about. So it just seems strange to me, I guess, that it would be that big of an obstacle, given the environment I'm coming from.

I do think, less on the dog-ownership tip, more on the life-stability tip, that renting is not incompatible with having a stable life. It is not a bad thing or necessarily temporary. It is okay to be renting; you can be pretty settled and be renting.

Financially I'm stable and doing okay, but idk I grew up moving at least once a year because rental agreements would change and I remember my folks stressing over the dogs all the time and I do not want to do that :(

You don't need those things. You can rent a place and have a dog, just be prepared to pay a higher deposit and maybe some places won't allow pets so you have fewer to choose from. And as long as you can take your dog to the vet for checkups and have some way (family, friend, animal ambulance service) for emergency care, there's no problem at all.

Huh. My boyfriend and I rent, and only he drives, but we have three dogs and intend to have dogs (and rent, and be a one-driver household) for the foreseeable future.

Hell, our neighborhood is made up entirely of rental duplexes, and it seems like everyone here has at least one dog. I've never heard of this criterion before.

Might just be the area I live in :( I have some pocket pets if awesome and its no problem because I can use public transport but a dog sized dog is a no
It's off the table for now but next year I am really hoping to get a dog D: and hope I don't need to do an emergency vet rush

If you have kindness, income, and a place to live that's bigger than a cage, I guarantee you'll be a massive step up in life for any shelter dog.
