Only because I just had an argument with my mother about this: I don't have a problem with limiting abortions to the 20-week mark. That's five months. It's half a pregnancy. And spare me the "but some people don't know they're pregnant yet!" whining.

Because if you're having sex, then pregnancy tests -- much like HIV and other STD tests -- need to be a part of managing your sexual health.

...And the rape victims who are in denial about their assault/afraid to tell anyone what happened to them/still under the power of their abuser? The women who don't have health insurance that covers abortions and are desperately trying to scrape together the money to pay for an abortion/take the time off from work to jump through all the hoops required to get one (hoops which are often designed to make the process take longer than it needs to)? The women who develop serious medical problems that cause an otherwise wanted pregnancy to threaten her life or health? The women who discover that their fetuses are dead or have deformities incompatible with life?

Even if you make exceptions for rape victims or the life of the mother (which many people are unwilling to do), forcing women to jump through hoops to prove they qualify for those exceptions isn't doing those women, who are already suffering, any favors. And if a woman was unable or unwilling to report her assault to the police for any number of legitimate reasons, how does she qualify for the exception?

No. Problems develop afterwards, people are forced to wait or go through pain. Developments happen, really bad developments happen. Contrary to expectation pro-choice are not happy children killers...and yes, some people don't exactly show their pregnancy and may be unaware of their pregnancy.

Especially since HIV/STD tests aren't every....gee it'd have to be checking every 2 or 3 months? No.

You can't grab something like when a fetus can be aborted and go "It has to be before this mark or you're out of luck". It's too complicated for that. Especially since 20 weeks the fetus is still teeny tiny and quite a few people won't show yet.

I'm gonna go ahead and confess I think you're a judgmental nosy butthead with a very limited understanding between the difference theory and reality.

Oh and CSB? My mother tested negative for pregnancy on two separate blood tests done by medical professionals before she started treatment for a pituitary tumor. Turns out she was three months pregnant with me at the time of the tests.

I love all the people who are freaking out about this confession. Hello, it's a confession. You're not supposed to think oh love and puppies about it. You're not even really supposed to debate it - you're entitled to as it's a public forum, but it's pretty darn pointless to the point of stupidity.

You know, insane extremist about this topic that I am, I might actually agree with you, if I could walk down the street to get an abortion at any public hospital for a reasonable fee - or covered by health insurance - without any harassment. Since that isn't the case - what with clinics being shut down left and right all over my country, people being allowed to picket outside anywhere that allows abortions, that women have to pay, out of pocket, hundreds of dollars for the procedure (and that isn't even counting the cost of transportation to a clinic, which can be all the way out-of-fucking-state in some places), and widespread lack of health coverage for abortion - then twenty weeks just isn't long enough.

People say they want women to think long and hard about ending a life, and then harass them for not doing it fast enough? Really?

the abortion rates after the first 15-20 weeks would plummet if sex education, contraceptive availability and easier abortion access were all truths in this society. the drive to limit abortion is what causes so many of these later abortions. people who care about human life would recognise that abortion at 6 weeks is better than abortion at 28; that not preaching abstinence and rendering youth uneducated yet still horny is what puts so many couples/people in this situation to begin with; that making women jump through hoops to get decent birth control won't prevent them from having sex, which is clearly the "real" goal in doing that.

this isn't hard to get. i understand your sentiment, and i definitely do not like to see later abortions. i don't like to see them at all, really, and i think almost all women who are pregnant and do not wish to be would agree. but the key to reducing abortions is not to restrict access to them. it's already too late, if that's your gameplan. the key to reducing abortions is to prevent unwanted pregnancies, period.

Inspired to post this one by the first reply: I am for enabling any woman to have an abortion at any time for any reason. (Even among pro-choice communities like mine, I fear my opinion might be too extreme. I could be wrong though.)

I don't think I'm ever going to be life-stable to get a dog (renting, no car by choice)...but I think I'm going to get one next year after settled in my new job.

I'm about 99% sure that I would abort if I found out my baby was going to have Down's Syndrome. (I leave a little room for doubt, because who knows how I'd actually feel in that situation. But I'm pretty certain.)

I have a chronic illness and sometimes when the symptoms get really bad, I get depressed. It doesn't help that I'm physically alone; everyone I share a connection with is hundred or even thousands miles away from me. I hate being so isolated. I love my friends and family for being so supportive, but I need more than facebook and email can offer. I live here because it's best for my treatment but I don't think it is worth it to stay. I don't think the treatment is worth it if I have nothing tangible in my life. I won't ever be able to work again, I can't have kids, and I just want to move back home and feel my SO's arms around me and see my friends instead of the latest picture they post on the web. After all I've been through and what I'm going through now, I believe that for me, quality of life is infinitely more important that longevity. And I wish I didn't because I know I've made my decision in my heart to discontinue treatment and return home despite the fatal consequences.
