I think cultural appropriation is a really stupid concept. Cultures borrow/steal/copy from each other all the time. They always have and they always will.

People always steal all kinds of things from each other and always will, doesn't mean we can't acknowledge when it's pretty douchey to do so. And it's not like there's laws against stealing from cultures like there is against stealing your neighbor's car.

Why do people insist on calling something "stealing" when nothing is ever taken from the victim in that scenario? Why don't we call it cultural plagiarism or something, God damn.

You're right, it's not theft (and not really "appropriation", either), but that's just being technical, people understand that you're not literally making off into the night with someone's heritage.

But if the cultural thing you're "stealing" has already been stolen, as often happens... is that still bad? Because the culture being copied has just copied it themselves. It's not "theirs" to begin with.

I'm with OP, I think cultures are fluid and intermix and that's a GOOD thing. Anything remaining too homogenous will develop problems.

Everything on the planet earth has been stolen/used without permission in the past, yet that still doesn't justify doing it again, right now, when people are aware that it can be insulting and ignorant.

And nobody's saying everything has to stay in their own special corner. People respectfully participate in and join new cultures all the time - they marry, adopt, immigrate, etc., and that's just fine. Appropriation is when you treat someone's culture like a poorly-researched and disposable fad, with no consideration, and when that someone says "hey, you're kinda mocking my heritage all up in my face, man", you say some bullshit about "but technically it's not ~yours~ to begin with, so I can do what I want! :D"

I agree. It's only when a particularly sacred part of a culture is trivialized is what I'm not down with.

I think people take the whole cultural appropriation thing too far, like you're appropriating a culture when you learn a different language, cook a foreign dish or practise a sport from another culture (like dance or martial arts). Or when they think something is part of a single culture when in fact, it appears in tons of different cultures (like flower crowns).
