Except that Madonna was making a statement about a religion she was raised in and a part of, whereas Lady Gaga is not.

So?

When did it suddenly become unacceptable to pass judgement on an ideology or culture you're not part of.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
All Muslims are delusional misogynists. See?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
a lot are, but not all

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think you need to get out more.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I live in a European country full of Muslims and so far I haven't met a single one who didn't somehow believe that the man should have command over the woman.

A large chunk of them even told me that they thought that Muslim women shouldn't be allowed to drive because that was "too Western".
Excuse me, wtf are you doing in a Western country then?!

Excuse me, wtf are you doing in a Western country then?!

THIS. SO HARD.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
a lot of idiots are, but not all

fixed that for you

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's not unacceptable, it just makes you look ignorant when you're inevitably wrong. But, far be it for me to keep people from making fools of themselves.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
You can do it. Just don't be surprised if people think you're being a bigot and/or talking out of your ass about a subject you know nothing about.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, you can only ever know anything about the culture you were raised in, now? I'm not saying that every criticism is an informed or accurate one, but is it really so impossible for a person to do research on another culture until they get to a point where they can offer meaningful criticism? Or are we still, for instance, saying that FGM is an important cultural ritual and shouldn't be criticized?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
"you know nothing about" You're making a mighty assumption there yourself. Just because you're not a part of a religion doesn't mean you can't know a thing about it.

Wasn't it just recently that a muslim man shot down a dumbass fox news people trying to question his authority on writing about Jesus? And basically the whole internet loved him for it? Muslims are allowed to speak about Christianity. Christians are allowed to speak about Islam. Atheist and Buddhists and so on can all discuss and criticize one another. It does't make you a bigot to find issues with another culture or religion.

Just because something is religious or cultural does NOT make it 100% okay and impervious to criticism.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
He got shot down because Jesus is an important figure in Islam, not just Christianity.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This is missing the point entirely... you can still talk about Jesus NO MATTER your religious background. If you've read lots about it and educated yourself, it does not matter what your background is.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

I actually agree with you; I was just pointing out that that isn't exactly the best example to prove the point.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, according to Islam Jesus was allegedly never crucified.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
lol @ Madonna getting a pass on appropriation. She's practically made a career of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
As an Italian Catholic she was hardly culturally appropriating her own culture. But then she moved on to more "exotic" ones.
