I'd rather fandom spaces hadn't been invaded by people who are hung up on demographics.

I've don't fully understand why people are so interested in labeling themselves, tbh. I understand that appropriate representation of different genders, races, ethniticities, sexualities, etc. is important, but sometimes I feel like the weird one for not really caring to label my sexuality or gender identification.

Edited because I said I don't understand, but I do to an extent. Personally, though, I don't feel the need for labels.

OP

I perfectly respect that. Everyone benefits from different schools of thought. I personally like labels for two reasons: one, if there's a word for people like me, it means I'm not alone; two, if I can "sort" myself into a "category", then I'm something that actually makes sense, and not just a floating mass of thought. Other people don't like being confined to such boxes, or reject labels for other reasons, and far be it from me to tell them they're wrong about what gives them peace of mind.

Okay, here's how I see it.

The problem isn't figuring out a label for yourself. The problem is policing everyone else's label, and then expecting them to understand yours no matter how specific it is.

Yeah, the problem isn't with people saying, "I'm blubsexual."

The problem is with people saying, "I'm blubsexual because hetero/homo/bisexual implies...."

I've always seen it as some people liking to share their identity with others, and it helps to have a clear-cut way to refer to themselves. If you're not the sharing type, then yeah, it'd be something of a mystery. Plus, modern culture is all about oversharing information and people who aren't into are the outliers (like the way people react when I say I don't have a Facebook - you'd think I just confessed to being a felon).
