Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you rather be part of a demographic that:

-Is well-known, and is increasingly on its way to being accepted, but still faces a lot of prejudice and oppression, and probably will for the foreseeable future, or one that...

-Is largely unknown, completely unrepresented, and most people who hear of it say it's not real, a phase, a fad, or a disorder -- but doesn't face many issues due to its anonymity?

Are you trying to decide which sexual identity that only exists on tumblr to pick, or...?

This is a weird question.

AM I A WOMAN

OR AM I A VAGINA-AFFILIATED DEMIFEMME

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
that presents as hard femme on tuesdays, as a hillbily on saturdays. rest of week schedule still to be decided.

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that said "vagina-afflicted" and for one horrible moment I could see people using that phrase seriously.

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rather be eating m&m cookies to be honest.

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, how good are m&m cookies! They are so good.

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The best demographic of cookie. And of m&ms.

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
The second one, definitely. I don't care about representation or other people's opinions as long as they let me be in peace.

Except that other people's opinions determine your rights and your ability to be left in peace in many cases...

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I technically deal with both, because of the demographics I fall into. Thing is, comparing them is kind of comparing apples to oranges since one has more societal consequences [oppression, prejudice, etc] and the other has more personal consequences ["I could never date someone like you!" "Ugh, I can't imagine ever being like that" along with dismissing the way that I am as a disorder/fad even when faced with proof that there is nothing physically wrong with me].

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
The former. Then again, I'm part of the latter group in multiple ways (the obvious one - sexuality - and disability), so I'm biased.

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-13 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I would want the first one. Personally I'd prefer to be in the privileged majority because it would make life easy (tm) but the accepted runner up is okay

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
So what you're asking is: Would you rather be hated and discriminated against by bigots (some of whom may pose an actual threat to your physical well-being), or be completely ignored except when smug assholes are telling you that you're a liar?

It's certainly an interesting question. I'm already part of two separate demographics, one that fits the first type you described and one that fits the second type. Given the choice to stop being in either of those demographics I think I would decide to stay the way I am.

Re: Here's a question.

I'd rather fandom spaces hadn't been invaded by people who are hung up on demographics.

uhhhhh.

man, that is some seriously loaded language. and wrong, i think.

I've don't fully understand why people are so interested in labeling themselves, tbh. I understand that appropriate representation of different genders, races, ethniticities, sexualities, etc. is important, but sometimes I feel like the weird one for not really caring to label my sexuality or gender identification.

Edited because I said I don't understand, but I do to an extent. Personally, though, I don't feel the need for labels.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I perfectly respect that. Everyone benefits from different schools of thought. I personally like labels for two reasons: one, if there's a word for people like me, it means I'm not alone; two, if I can "sort" myself into a "category", then I'm something that actually makes sense, and not just a floating mass of thought. Other people don't like being confined to such boxes, or reject labels for other reasons, and far be it from me to tell them they're wrong about what gives them peace of mind.

Okay, here's how I see it.

The problem isn't figuring out a label for yourself. The problem is policing everyone else's label, and then expecting them to understand yours no matter how specific it is.

I've always seen it as some people liking to share their identity with others, and it helps to have a clear-cut way to refer to themselves. If you're not the sharing type, then yeah, it'd be something of a mystery. Plus, modern culture is all about oversharing information and people who aren't into are the outliers (like the way people react when I say I don't have a Facebook - you'd think I just confessed to being a felon).

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I think the first one. I've experience with that kind of prejudice (though it's never threatened my life or safety) and for all the discrimination sucks, there are so many positives in the shared community.

With the second one I'd be worrying that I was actually just being some kind of fakey wannabe snowflake like the ridiculous demisexuals.

Re: Here's a question.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
First one. Anonymity can be as dangerous as it is beneficial, because without acknowledgement, there's no help when you need it.

Re: Here's a question.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-08-14 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Well, interpreting this in terms of sexual orientation.

First of all, I'm fundamentally a lumper and not a splitter. The three-box model of sexual orientation that we currently have is, in my opinion, two boxes too many. Human sexuality can be described but it can't be comfortably categorized as if we were species of birds. Those social constructions map weakly onto the ontology of biology and human psychology.

Now, even though the three-box model is a social construction, it's still one that I have to live with. I've been battered because of anti-bisexual prejudice. I've experienced relationship violence because of anti-bisexual prejudice. When Savage, Bailey, and the CDC talk about bisexual people, they're talking about me. For about 20 years, I've been part of a broadly defined bisexual community that is inclusive of binary, non-binary, fluid, and queer sexualities.

The construction of those sexualities isn't entirely up to me. I can call myself queer, omnisexual, or pansexual for flavor and convenience, but it doesn't fundamentally change the politics that define me. Labeling myself that doesn't change the reality of anti-bisexual prejudice that I experience.
