Re: Here's a question.
First of all, I'm fundamentally a lumper and not a splitter. The three-box model of sexual orientation that we currently have is, in my opinion, two boxes too many. Human sexuality can be described but it can't be comfortably categorized as if we were species of birds. Those social constructions map weakly onto the ontology of biology and human psychology.
Now, even though the three-box model is a social construction, it's still one that I have to live with. I've been battered because of anti-bisexual prejudice. I've experienced relationship violence because of anti-bisexual prejudice. When Savage, Bailey, and the CDC talk about bisexual people, they're talking about me. For about 20 years, I've been part of a broadly defined bisexual community that is inclusive of binary, non-binary, fluid, and queer sexualities.
The construction of those sexualities isn't entirely up to me. I can call myself queer, omnisexual, or pansexual for flavor and convenience, but it doesn't fundamentally change the politics that define me. Labeling myself that doesn't change the reality of anti-bisexual prejudice that I experience.
