I really don't like it, the english dub was my first exposure too but I watched the Japanese series in it's entirety and Tsukino Usagi is her name, not Serena.

The Sailor Soldiers (and it's Soldiers, not Scouts, Scouts makes absolutely no sense) all have names that have meaning that relate to who they are. Usagi is the rabbit of the moon, Haruka is the sky king, etc. It'd be one thing if they had random names, but they're names really serve a purpose.

Nostalgia is fun but I will always dislike a few things the english dub brought about, and the names is one of them.

*their names

Wasn't Serena short for Serenity? It's not like the name came out of nowhere. There was some meaning behind it (even if it was a bit ham-fisted).

I probably should have worded my response better, but yes, I know Serena was taken from that, but it's still not what Usagi means. It's not supposed to be that obvious that Usagi is Serenity early on in the series.

I was better with Bunny, but mostly I prefer anime characters keep their japanese names. It just feels unnecessary and a little bit... wrong?

Serena and Lita do as well (the other three just have names which adapt their Japanese names).

Serena is etymologically connected to Selene*, a moon-goddess. The lover of Endymion, and the Greek equivalent to the Roman Luna. It's also etymologically connected to 'Serenity' (which was presumably chosen by Takeuchi due to the connection to Selene - which also becomes closer in sound, when transliterated into Japanese). * Probably. The etymology of Selene is unclear.

Lita is a soundalike of Leda, one of the lovers of Zeus, and one of the moons of Jupiter.

Except Usagi's reveal as Serenity is meant to be a bit of a surprise (okay we know it's obvious, but kid's show, right?) So naming her Serena changes the story.

I was better with translated versions where they used Bunny, because it's at least somewhat close to Usagi.

I am also just not a fan of changing Japanese names in any case, children can learn Japanese names, why is it even necessary to change it?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Because the people who are responsible for those decisions generally think children are much more stupid than they really are.

Or because the English voice actors can't pronounce the bloody things right half the time.
