Let me guess, because that's what you 'grew up with?'

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
LOL soon enough we'll hear the "We Should Be Grateful That Sailor Moon Was Even Introduced In America" speech

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Not the secret-maker, but what's wrong with that reasoning? Yeah, we all know that her name is Tsukino Usagi but to anyone who watched the dub, fell in love with the show, and didn't know any differently as kids... yeah, her name is going to be Serena.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Never watched the show myself either way, but I've seen several people who just don't like the original names of certain anime characters, even if they saw the original version first and/or prefer it in every other respect.

Sometimes names from other cultures just come off as unappealing if you don't otherwise encounter them much (or at all) in your daily life.

I can't reupload, but my guess:

Sailor Moon (??), an anime girl/woman with blonde hair, huge eyes, two red gems like mouse ears on her head, winking and smiling at us. Secret reads: "She will always be 'Serena' to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I use both Usagi and Serena. I see no problem why we can't acknowledge both names (and the others, I hear in some dubs her name was "Bunny").

Slightly OT, but it took me a really long time to figure out that "Rini" is a nickname for Serena. I thought they just pulled that name out of nowhere to give Chibiusa.

Bunny is a great name solely for the fact that "odango atama"/"meatball head" could be translated as "Buns". Best woolseyism. ♥

Me too, since I haven't seen it since it was on Canadian TV around 95-96... I only found out what her original name was less than a year ago!

She will always be 'Serena' to me.

This.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't like it, the english dub was my first exposure too but I watched the Japanese series in it's entirety and Tsukino Usagi is her name, not Serena.

The Sailor Soldiers (and it's Soldiers, not Scouts, Scouts makes absolutely no sense) all have names that have meaning that relate to who they are. Usagi is the rabbit of the moon, Haruka is the sky king, etc. It'd be one thing if they had random names, but they're names really serve a purpose.

Nostalgia is fun but I will always dislike a few things the english dub brought about, and the names is one of them.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
*their names

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't Serena short for Serenity? It's not like the name came out of nowhere. There was some meaning behind it (even if it was a bit ham-fisted).

Serena and Lita do as well (the other three just have names which adapt their Japanese names).

Serena is etymologically connected to Selene*, a moon-goddess. The lover of Endymion, and the Greek equivalent to the Roman Luna. It's also etymologically connected to 'Serenity' (which was presumably chosen by Takeuchi due to the connection to Selene - which also becomes closer in sound, when transliterated into Japanese). * Probably. The etymology of Selene is unclear.

Lita is a soundalike of Leda, one of the lovers of Zeus, and one of the moons of Jupiter.

I can go with any of her names, really. I actually never found Serena to be a bad name, considering that it's related to Serenity. And most American audiences at the time of the initial airing would pick up on the "rabbit on the moon" pun--using "Bunny" without knowing that context sounds more like an early 90s Valley Girl name, IMO.

I just call her whichever I feel like at the time.
Although I lean more heavily towards "Usagi" for the Japanese dub of the cartoon, the Japanese merch, and the manga.
While I lean more heavily towards "Serena" for the English dub of the cartoon and the English merch.

In a similar train of thought, the DiC music during the first through R seasons will always sound like the "true" music, to me.
As will the song "Power of Love" for the R movie.

I'm glad I was introduced to it by Turkish dubs, better than the original and English ones. So I don't have any problems regarding to Usagi's real name.

Ehh, never watched the show, though I read fanfics every once in a while. It feels a bit off to be reading about characters that I know are supposed to be Japanese to be running around wearing English names.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-14 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
...Since I tend to think of the Japanese original and the dub as almost a separate series, I think I'll be okay. Lol.
