Avoiding being friendly with or defending a classmate who was laughed at and avoided by most of the year level. She desperately wanted to be liked and have friends. In hindsight, she probably had some kind of learning disability.

As someone who knew how painful loneliness can be, and who desperately wanted friends, I should have defended her, and I should have been a true friend to her.

My fear of being mocked & ostracized just for being associated with her turned me into a coward.

Having been on the flip side in many respects... hopefully, like me, she understands you were just a scared teenager, and that she wasn't a complete saint herself.

Also, in some way this made younger me feel a bit better, so, you know. :)
