People who think they are a contestant in a misery contest in order to get attention.

If I say I had a bad day. They counter-say that their day was worse. If I hurt myself. They say that my pain isn't compared to theirs for what ever recent injury. If I said I had a rough childhood. They say they had it even rougher. Everything in their life is worse therefore everyone should give them only them sympathy and attention because heaven forbid they actually have to be sympathetic.

I have a relative who does this all the freaking time. It's annoying as hell. One time, we were at a doctor's appointment for her and she was talking to a breast cancer survivor who had to have both breasts removed. Well, my relative was trying to say that somehow she was worse off than the survivor because she had Celiacs. I had to walk out of the room to prevent myself from yelling, "WHAT?!!"

My mother does this. She doesn't seem to understand the concept of "commiseration."

Yes! My dad does this, and it drives my mom and I nuts. Like she always likes to say, it's not a contest.

Oh man, I have a co-worker like that, but with her it's health things. If someone has a headache, she has a migraine, if someone's got pink-eye, she has iritis.
