In this case they're interpreting the character as closeted/pre-transition.

And ... I feel like I see trans headcanons being "this character is closeted/pre-transition" much more often. I don't know if that's actually the case, but that's my impression. (And tbh that kind of bugs me)

yeah I understand that young people use fandom to explore and get comfortable with themselves, but if it's perpetuating these kind of gender stereotypes it makes me uncomfortable...
