I've never seen this phenomenon, and whenever it's mentioned I don't know if people are taking a character who's presented as one gender and interpreting them as assigned the other gender at birth, or if they're interpreting the character as trans* but closeted or pre-transition.

When I've seen it (mostly about male characters) it's about 50/50.

(Also, I learned from one such discussion, that a lot of people still don't know the differences between drag queens, transvestites, and people who are trans*...)

In this case they're interpreting the character as closeted/pre-transition.

And ... I feel like I see trans headcanons being "this character is closeted/pre-transition" much more often. I don't know if that's actually the case, but that's my impression. (And tbh that kind of bugs me)

yeah I understand that young people use fandom to explore and get comfortable with themselves, but if it's perpetuating these kind of gender stereotypes it makes me uncomfortable...
