erasure is a little harsh. for one thing, because there's still there in the canon. don't think it's erasure. just stupid.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure the number of fans who headcanon such characters as trans is less than the number of fans who don't. Get over it. No one is "erasing" you.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does your secret end with a comma?

Only Dumblr does that. You should spend your time in better places than that shithole.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this seriously a thing anywhere other than tumblr?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't this whole thing disproven anyway and it came back to the mangaka being offended over someone insulting his art and something about Japanese being a drop language or something along those lines?

10/10, this is sure to generate wank, and it's very subtle, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think erasure is too strong a word for this situation, but I understand what you're saying. And agree. It's also frustrating.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I would think they'd be headcanoned as a lesbian more often than trans*. I've only ever seen this happen when it's questionable if the character is actually a man or a woman.

[personal profile] poisonenvy 2013-08-15 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen this happen in real life (I guess a friend of mine saw a tomboyey looking girl with her mother, who was trying to buy her all these girly things, and my friend was like "If your daughter's actually a boy, let him be!") and all I could think of was "Hey, this was my exact same situation, and I'm cis. Uhm... how about we don't make assumptions about how people identify, because tomgirls/girlish boys (...is there a male equivalent to tomboy?) do exist."

But it was literally my only friend who I've ever seen doing this, so it's not really enough to get me bent out of shape either way.

It's a bit... annoying in the sense that, well, why would you assume someone was trans based on their physical characteristics? Masculine women and feminine men abound, of both the cis and trans variety. Hanji's a woman, period. Trying to make assumptions about her "real" gender is the exact opposite of what someone interested in social justice should do - isn't it?

Moreover, yeah, as tall, not particularly feminine woman with an androgynous voice it's irksome that those characteristics automatically = not cis-gendered, to some.

Please stop calling every interest a woman has that isn't 100% whatever-your-concept-of-femme-is "gendrfluid." Hell, please don't call every interest a guy has that isn't 100% whatever you think is macho "genderfluid."

The rest of the world isn't as enamored with tumblr lingo.

It's also fucking misogynist.

Edit: That's imprecise. It's fucking SEXIST. You can like women and still have weird messed up ideas about them. Not that, you know, you're better now.

It's some pretty annoying gender-essentiallist bullshit, but I've seen it done to male characters way more than female.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-15 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It doesn't really bother me, as long as it's done respectfully. If someone says "hey, this woman is somewhat masculine, so they must actually identify as a man" that's pretty problematic. On the other hand if trans* fans or genderqueer fans see a character and want to identify with them that way, or if people just want to mine that potential... no skin off my nose?

And in the end, whatever, it's someone else's headcanon. Who cares, unless you live in their head?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Well, as a butch cis woman, I don't feel "seriously erased", because I'm, you know, still cis, and accepted for that. But I fucking goddamn wish people out there wouldn't auto assume I'm somehow "male" or have "male" attributes, because they are attached to me, as a cis woman, and therefore they are not "male", they are me, "female".

Headcanons where a butch(ish) canon-woman must be trans* - can't criticise anyone for that, but if it's ubiquitous I start to think that overall it's less about identification, or gender playfulness, and more about "butch = male amirite".

Just as a woman who has "masculine" traits isn't necessarily trans*, a woman who has "masculine" traits is also not necessarily "genderfluid."

I feel like a lot of the discussion that surrounds "genderfluidity" is ignoring a rather big component of gender, namely that it's socially constructed. The conversation plays at challenging stereotypes and confronting gender issues, but it actually operates within the same bullshit framework that gives rise to those stereotypes and issues.

If your gender identity is actually fluid to a particular extent, or runs contrary to how you prefer to pass physically, then that's great and it should be accepted. But don't assume that everyone who steps outside of traditional roles or behaviors or interests or what-have-you is the same way. That's...kind of exactly the sort of thing you're complaining about.

dumb question time

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen this phenomenon, and whenever it's mentioned I don't know if people are taking a character who's presented as one gender and interpreting them as assigned the other gender at birth, or if they're interpreting the character as trans* but closeted or pre-transition.

As annoying as may be that it's always these same sorts of characters that people project such headcanons on to, it's not as if mainstream media exactly has many actual trans* characters. If people want to see some diversity in that regard, they don't have much choice but to make it themselves.

GENDERFLUID

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've read "genderfuid" so many times in this thread that I'm starting to think of it as some kind of physical substance, like "I keep a bottle of Gender Fluid under the sink" or "I need to take my car in to get the Gender Fluid changed."

warning for talk of gender identity in fiction (for whomever that might be a triggery subject)

warning for talk of gender identity in fiction (for whomever that might be a triggery subject)

[Picture is Zoë Hanji/Hange and Levi/Rivai/Rivaille from the anime "Shingeki no Kyojin" or "Attack on Titan". Zoe is a young woman with light skin and long pinkish purple hair pulled into a ponytail, wearing eyeglasses. Levi is a young man with light skin and short, straight dark hair. They are both wearing a sort of military uniform, consisting of a white shirt, a short brown jacket, white pants/trousers, reddish brown boots and an elaborate system of harnesses all over their bodies. Zoe is smiling and making a "V" peace sign with her hand next to her forehead, while she slings her other arm around Levi. Levi is frowning and looking to the side, while crossing his arms in front of his chest.]

I can't stand the way that every slightly 'masculine' woman, or one who shows the slightest hint of genderfluid interests or personality is automatically headcanoned to be trans*.

It feels like a serious erasure of the uncountable numbers of us who exist.

On "gender fluid"

(Anonymous) 2013-08-16 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
As far as I'm concerned....if someone considers themselves genderfluid and goes by different pronouns? Then they are. Because it's what they feel like and identify as.

However ,you can't cay someone else is genderfluid if they don't consider themselves such. (talking about real people of course) I don't believe on imposing it every character that isn't 100% 'girl' or 'boy' but I also don't believe in dismissing something that some people actually like to identify as.

It seems just as disrespectful if, say because I started wearing my hair short or dressing guyish people started considering me a guy and telling me I was a guy and should answer to "him" and "he".
