on the topic of Shingeki no Kyojin, though...

...i think Hanji's a guy. Idk, but I feel strongly reminded of characters like Watari in YnM. I'm not thinking trans but simply effeminate okama/potentially crossdressing maybe gay guy. The gifted psycho-okama is definitely a thing (but so is the gifted psycho female, of course).
One of the reasons I think so is the Name Hanji. It could be transcript for the german diminutive of Johannes: Hansi.
(on the other hand the german in SnK is definitely very good, so there should exist material where he's written "Hansi". but idk about german in the manga. def. gotta read it sometime.)

Hansi

Why would you think of Hansi to be a guy when the Japanese voice actress is definitely female?

P.S.: There are female and male Hansi in Germany. Let's not forget about Johanna.

na

...Are you trolling? The voice actress is a female who almost exclusively voices male characters.

yah, but "hansi" is a legitimate first name in the male version, only, and is also more common...
also, yeah, voice actor usually doesn't count for a lot where gender is concerned. leastways not in japan...somehow western localization always seeks to "correct" that.(son goku's US dub *shudder*) Something I hate.

Well actually, Hansi is a diminutive version of Hans or Johannes/Johann. You wouldn't really find a lot of people who have Hansi as their proper first name.

Nope, Hanji is female and it's been discussed to death already - the only people who ever doubted it are tumblr brats and people like the person who (involuntarily) started the whole debate because they were confused by the art style.

Zoe was also confirmed to be her first name. Also, except for a few names, I think there's no German in the manga. The only German I know of is in the anime's opening.

yeah, like I said, I didn't read the manga, and I wasn't aware of the Hanji-Gender-discussion until it popped up a few weeks ago on fandomsecrets. He/She just struck me as a typical effeminate (gay?) male support character, of which there are quite a few. I watched it raw the first time and was surprised when the sub gave had female pronouns.
Though of course I wouldn't mind if she/he were a woman.

oh, and I didn't find anything when I looked for which was the first name, so I'd love to see your source.

Yeah, I understand your reasoning.

Uh... I'm actually not quite sure now - apparently Kodansha stated her name as Zoe Hange in the translation, so that might be an error? But it would make sense, since Zoe is a first name. But ah, well.
