The costumes aren't the biggest draw for me, but I do love them! Some of them are really exquisite, and I love how intricate they are.

First is Atsu-hime from the Japanese TV show "Atsu-hime" as portrayed by Miyazaki Aoi, then a character I couldn't identify from possibly "Gō: Hime-tachi no Sengoku", and finally Uesugi Kenshin from the Japanese TV show "Tenchijin", as portrayed by Gackt. They're all wearing meticulously decorated historical Japanese clothes. They all have light skin and long dark hair done in hair-styles of the time.]

Yes.

Of course there are other reasons to watch historical movies/shows (I love history in general: historical events are often way more imaginative and dramatic than fiction, and historical periods are just as useful a metaphor as science fiction to explore human nature), but the costumes are always a very welcome and appreciated bonus or even the prime motivator, especially when they are as beautiful as in the examples provided!

Sort of like a fashion show with plot, except the costumes are more esthetically pleasing than those most modern fashion shows...

Well, yeah. Period dramas are aaaalllll about the costumes. The more accurate the better, though I'll admit to happily trading 'accurate' for 'REALLY PRETTY' a lot of the time too.

Taiga dramas are my crack. Other costume dramas as well, but those NHK taiga dramas have fantastic costumes!

Pretty much the best reason to watch those sorts of movies, because they barely ever get the history right. I was lucky enough to be at ACMI in Melbourne when they did their Hollywood Costume exhibition, and I got to see some of those awesome clothes up close. DROOL ~

SO... anyone has any recs for costume dramas (any country)... that don't have a love story as the main plot at some point? Because I love costume dramas but suffering through the love plots is annoying.
