Back off a little, then.

It's possible to maintain these things. I've done it. My mom has been best friends with the same person for over 45 years. You just gotta realize that a friendship is a relationship and it needs structure and no one person is going to fulfill all of your emotional needs, but they can be good for you in some ways and you can be good for them in some ways. And if sometimes they would rather spend some time with a different friend, or by themselves, that's gotta be okay with you. Don't let your happiness depend on them, is what I'm trying to say.

Hmm. That's actually probably really helpful, thanks. I have all these ideas about what a friendship should be (mostly gleaned from movies), and every time I come across something to challenge them, my brain just shakes it off and continues searching for that "nakama" as TV Tropes calls it should never have stopped calling it. Nth time's the charm, maybe...

Well think of it this way. You can BE that 'nakama' and be understanding when they want to do other things without you. This is hard for me too. But the more I learn about friendships as a give-and-take, and the less I expect from them, the more meaningful they become. I've been learning to take joy in the joy my friends experience, and the ones I'm closest to also are happy when I am happy. You don't have to explicitly share moments to share happiness. It's a little complicated, but just understanding the other person and their needs does wonders for how you learn to treat them.
