I didn't like Aerith before and I don't like Aerith even more after the compilation. I still think she is the JRPG version of a mary sue (perky feminine exterior hiding a dark past/life/fate).

I should add that honestly it's the angelic treatment that tends to ruin these kinds of characters for me. It's just something I NEVER like. Ever. It's the reason why I'm always hesitant to like female mage/healer characters from Japanese media. Same thing with Action girls. Once they hit a certain cliche I tune out. For Aerith, the angelic thing was what made me dislike her.

But I'd argue that Aeris ISN'T an "angelic" character. At least not in the original game. What I think is interesting about FFVII is that the "action girl" - Tifa, and the "healer" - Aeris, actually have flipped stereotypical personalities. Aeris is outgoing, inappropriate, and headstrong. Tifa is more insecure and quiet about her feelings.

Though the Compilation tries to give Aeris all this angelic imagery, which I and I assume the OP find contrary to her original portrayal.

I never get this, because it's like you don't believe there are actual living, breathing people who are like this--they've gone through shit, and they might have some issues, but they're coping and they try to be as happy as they can be.

Yeah but the difference is that IRL people pity you and isolate themselves from you instead of flocking to you, being overprotective of you, or seeing you as a living angel.

No one sees Aerith as a living angel. Hell, Tifa is the one actually praised as an "angel of the slums", so if you want to make complaints about that...


Cloud has a thing about protecting people (that goes all the way back to Tifa and his childhood) and the group rescues her from Shinra because Aerith was only captured because of Barret's daughter and has already helped Tifa out twice over. She gets idealized after her death (which does happen, people tend to hesitate about badmouthing the dead) and even then Tifa cuts the crap when Cloud suggests Aerith willingly sacrificed herself to remind him that Aerith talked about the future often and had probably been planning to come back.

And hello, all of AVALANCHE contradicts your estimation of irl people reacting to people with dark pasts. From that estimation they should be shunning Cloud, Vincent, Barret, etc. because of the bad stuff in their past.

Not everyone irl is that bad, anyway.
