I hate how Aerith is portrayed ever since the Final Fantasy VII Compilation.

One of the reasons I loved her in the original Final Fantasy VII is because she was such a sassy, headstrong and confident character. It's a shame those character traits have been replaced with the "generic nice/innocent/angelic girl" trope.

And this is why I don't accept anything from Compilation as canon. Her name is Aeris, and she's a feisty little firebrand that can hold her own.

On the same note, screw any other portrayal of Cloud than the one from the game. LET'S MOSEY. Let's not sit in secluded places and brood.

Agreed. And even before she was portrayed like that a lot of fanboys seemed to think of her as the innocent beautiful fragile flower since Tifa already fulfilled the "badass chick" role and they wanted some one more submissive. Once I finally played the game I kept waiting for Aeris to show this personality all these male fans insisted she had but I never saw it... and liked her way better.

I blame the fans.

So many of the fans would claim that Tifa is the "strong" one for being a physical character and Aeris is the "damsel in distress" for being a holy mage. I still don't know if we played the same game.

My love for Aeris is entirely because she's anything but. Kept on describing her as the girl who'd sneak pot into prison, and this is how I always see her.

It's funny, call a girl a white mage and give her a pink dress, and her personality has been decided by the fans. But it's like... Aeris is the opposite of what you think... the opposite!

I completely agree. It's so irritating how people seem to completely miss the point of those characters and instead dictate personality on appearance. Which completely misses the point?! And then people hate on Aeris for something she never was in the first place. I'm so glad you made this comment because that POV is SO PREVALENT that I was feeling super frustrated.

<.<; I have to admit, Aerith was never a character I liked, even before the compilation stuff. I think I used to basically see her as who the compilations changed her into. Is that weird/make sense?

To be fair Compilation kind of screwed everyone's characterizations over. Except like...maybe Tifa, she seemed fairly unaltered. Cloud, Aerith, and Vincent got the mega-short end of the stick, but Rude and Reno pissed me off too. Like, the slapstick was kind of funny, I guess, but those dudes were cruel in the game, that was the whole point.

I liked Vincent in Case of Nanaki. ...Of course Case of Nanaki kind of screwed Nanaki over, so. As a whole, compilation writing is an exercise in frustration.

You could probably argue it started even earlier; Cloud's cameo in Final Fantasy Tactics worked her in as a damsel in distress. I mean she's still got a bit of attitude, but she's there purely to be rescued and illustrate Cloud's grief over her death (if he leaves the party over not having enough Brave his quote is pretty much "I couldn't even save one girl, what did you expect?")

Something about cameos reinforces stereotyping. At least the way Square does it, it seems to.

FF7 Aeris had a sense of humour, something that is really missed in her later appearances.

I totally agree. This has bothered me for a long time! They just turn her into such a doormat. In FFVII she sneaks out against Cloud's wishes to go with him, and in Kingdom Hearts she's all, "Oh I'll wait for you Cloud! Bye!"

The only time Aeris seemed remotely in character in KH was in the second game when she gave a DEATH GLARE to Leon and he instantly backed down out of terror. That's the girl I know and love!

No kidding. I've been reading a FF7 LP on the SA forums, and many people were outright SHOCKED at how Aeris was like in the original game. Even non-fans had assumed that she really was this delicate little flower, and then they saw her threaten to rip a pimp's balls off.

(Not to mention how much fun she had dressing up Cloud as a chick. It is my headcanon that Aeris is pretty kinky and nothing will dissuade me from this.)

Honestly, it's one of the reasons why I've totally lost faith in SE's storytelling ability. You can cater to fans and give them what they want, but you NEVER let them dictate your storytelling. Otherwise shit like this happens.

You are me, if only you had written Aeris instead of Aerith.

I know the Aeris vs Aerith debate has existed since the game came out (and I was there playing it back then) but now, "Aerith" makes me think of the Compilation character which is so, so not the real Aeris. Aeris is a such a troll in the game, and I will never forgive Nomura for completely failing at her. :-/

So awesome to see all these Aeris fans on F/S though, yay us. :D

I didn't like Aerith before and I don't like Aerith even more after the compilation. I still think she is the JRPG version of a mary sue (perky feminine exterior hiding a dark past/life/fate).

I should add that honestly it's the angelic treatment that tends to ruin these kinds of characters for me. It's just something I NEVER like. Ever. It's the reason why I'm always hesitant to like female mage/healer characters from Japanese media. Same thing with Action girls. Once they hit a certain cliche I tune out. For Aerith, the angelic thing was what made me dislike her.

I never get this, because it's like you don't believe there are actual living, breathing people who are like this--they've gone through shit, and they might have some issues, but they're coping and they try to be as happy as they can be.
