There kind of hasn't been anything likable about his character in a loooooong while (or maybe ever? I used to like this show but now I barely remember why) but I guess in the creators' minds he fits the "lovable douchebag" mold.

Do you mean NPH or one of his characters?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Came here to ask this.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
i think that's a promo photo of Barny Stinson so I'm assuming that's who OP is referring to

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I never got "likable" but funny, oh yes. He is just such a massive over the top parody of the self-styled ladies man that I find his stuff hilarious. That and it also helps me look at the real life self-styled ladies men and the disparity between the two is fabulous.

You could say that about the whole show really but yes, he's the epitome of the sort of lame, wannbe funny tired humor of the show.

[Picture is the actor Neil Patrick Harris playing Barney Stinson from the TV show "How I Met Your Mother". He has light skin, short blond hair and is wearing a white shirt with gray lines, a dark red tie, and a grayish-brown suit jacket. He is holding his tie with one hand and looking at the viewer with raised eyebrows. He seems to be leaning against, or at least standing fairly close to, a rough wall.]

I don't get what's so funny or likeable about him.

I'm gonna guess you mean Barney, not NPH.

I don't get all the love for Barney either. He was okay in the first few seasons, but after he got back together with Robin, I found him hard to handle.

Robin seemed like she was pandering to him in season 8 and Barney doesn't treat her that well. I liked them when they first got together, but not anymore. They're better off without each other now.

Season 8 Barney/Robin almost makes me ship Robin/Ted (which is problematic too. Poor future mother. She'll have to deal with all his Robin hangups).

Simply put, it's the male gaze.

Male writers and audiences see something cool and enviable when they see a male abusing women. It's a wish fulfilment thing. from their pov he's the ideal male, free to do as he wants to women without fear of repercussions. Same as the Fonzie secret the other day.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees it like this. I just...don't see what's so funny in men who treat women as nothing more than a conquest. And it really bothers me that genuinely funny comedies like 30 Rock or Parks and Recreation struggled with their ratings, while cheap sleazy crap like Two and a Half Men (and even Big Bang Theory, to an extent) get renewed season after season after season.

Yeah, this.
I even had a male ex-friend of mine state out of the blue that "NPH's gayness was a problem to him at first, but then when he saw that his character fucks all the stupid chicks he became his hero".

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh the only reason barney is at all amusing or even tolerable as a character is because NPH is gay. it makes him come off more as a parody of straight guy machismo rather than "yeah this guy is awesome!!"

of course the promotion of the show tells a completely different story...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's cuz he's handsome. When an ugly guy acts like a jerk it's all, "What a jerk!" When a handsome guy acts like a jerk, it's all, "Aw, he's so cute!"

Yeah. That sucks.

For the record, I find him attractive. I just don't think he's a nice character or someone we should find appealing in this society. But people do.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. It's such a double standard.
Probably also the reason why some people can be as violent as they please and still have their fans defend them and say shit like "I'd let him hit me any time, teehee!"

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think he's handsome. I think he looks like a smart version of Alfred E. Neuman without the missing front tooth.

At this point, I wish this show would end less because I think it's past it's time (and it is. It was a few seasons ago), but more because I'm sick of people complaining about how the characters are awful people.

Yes. They are. But that's what a sitcom is: it's a show about terrible people causing terrible things to happen to themselves because they're so terrible. The entire purpose of the genre is to give viewers ridiculous caricatures that they can point and laugh at.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing you mean the character? The character in that show is just awful, from everything I've seen/heard. He just comes off as a jackass who has no respect for women. But clearly, if you wear a suit and say it with a punch-line you're gold.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I find both the actor AND the character insufferable, for different reasons.
