Be careful what you wish for, I say. I wasn't as dedicated to my ship as you are but a few years ago I was part of a fandom ship that was hugely popular, the creators listened (I'm guessing; it could have been planned all along), and it became canon. After flipping my shit about it and being overjoyed, I pretty quickly realized that the characters completely lost the thread and were no longer the characters I had come to know and love.

I ended up walking away from that fandom hating half of the pair and being glad the show was done with. These days, I'm a lot more realistic with my shipping and enjoy it for what it is since just because something is canon doesn't automatically make it better or a difference in the long run.

Is this like what happened with the interaction between the Xena fandom and the writers?

Are you talking about Klaine or Brennan/Booth? Because dear lord, the derailment of their characterizations...ugh.

Brennan/Booth are a thing now?! (Pardon me, very behind on Bones.) What happened? Where was the derailment?

Not only are they a thing, they have a kid together. And may or may not be engaged (not for sure on that part, I haven't seen the last part of the most recent season but I've heard people talk about it).

You're welcome! I realized I didn't really answer your question before, so more details if you want them (more spoilers!)...

Essentially they had a one night stand that she ended up pregnant from, which then led to them deciding to give being in a relationship a try. They bought a house and moved in together, the baby was born (in a barn in a ridiculous biblical parallel), things were good for awhile, then she was framed for murder by this super genius computer hacker serial killer guy. She took the baby and went on the run and didn't really contact Booth for a few months, things were eventually cleared up and she got to come back, he was pissed that she ran off, after a couple episodes they were back to normal. There was a completely ridiculous episode where Angela somehow stopped genius hacker serial killer dude from dropping bombs on some school kids but as a result her and Hodgins' (not sure how behind you are, but they're married and have a kid too) money was stolen. Brennan got shot and found religion and I stopped watching, the end.

(Not really the end obviously but I don't know what happened beyond that other than hearing about them possibly being engaged at this point.)

SA: Dear fucking God. There's convoluted, and then there's... that. I'm very glad I didn't stay to see all that. It sounds like they pretty much utterly butchered characters and plots, so thank you for the warning. Am now going to walk away dazedly from the box set a friend offered to lend me.

It was...bad. And honestly, the stuff I mentioned doesn't even begin to cover how convoluted and ridiculous it all was...I know I'm forgetting some things. Oh! Like Booth seeing ghosts, which later turned out be caused by a brain tumor or something. But yeah, everyone was so out of character, any growth that had occurred over the course of the series pretty much disappeared, none of the plots made even the slightest bit of sense...I have no idea why I watched as long as I did.

So, uh, Bones pretty much turned into Dallas? (And I like new!Dallas, if just for its sheer, laughable awfulness.) But I do have a love for character growth, so I think I would have given up on the series very, very quickly. I think Chuck narrowly avoided the same fate, in the shipping-overtakes-good-writing regard.

Way worse than Dallas. The original was before my time but IMO new!Dallas is nowhere near as awful as Bones became the last few seasons.

Uuuuugh. SO glad I ragequit Bones after they made her cute little student helper into a cannibal.

I know a lot of people that quit at that point...they were smart. It got so, so, so much worse after that.

I never forgave them for that. :(

Yeah. She'd hacked into some computer system that the dude was using to control the bombings, and at the same time he'd also hacked into their bank or whatever and was draining all their accounts. So she had to choose whether to stop him from draining their bank accounts or stop the bombs from going off and killing a bunch of kids, and she chose to save the kids so they lost all their money. And yes, it was as nonsensical and ridiculous as it sounds.

Why the hell didn't they sue the bank to reclaim their money?

I'm glad I quit in S3.

Another popular community had a thread about what would happen if popular ships became reality, and it was hilarious AND cringe-worthy at the same time. I'm sure you could think up some examples too.

Huddy?

This was my first thought. I was never into Huddy (and didn't like most of the shippers, tbh) but I was in the House fandom and I actually felt bad for the Huddies after a few episodes of that debacle.

My first thoughts were Huddy or Booth/Brennan, and I totally agree on both accounts. At least with Booth/Brennan, though, I still like the earlier seasons. What canon!Huddy did to the show (as well as other things in the later seasons) completely ruined even my love for earlier seasons. I no longer care about any of the characters or have any interest in rewatching.

YES.

This is EXCATLY why I have so little faith in fan favourite pairings becoming canon!
