The Last Of Us (impressions as I near the end)

[personal profile] dethtoll 2013-08-17 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a lot of very pretty games over the years, but I have to say, The Last Of Us, on a purely graphical scale, is friggin' gorgeous, even taking into account the weaker PS3 hardware. They've got the lighting just right.

In a lot of ways it's basically what the Walking Dead shooter SHOULD have been. I'll be honest -- I'm getting bored with zombie stuff and that's as someone who was into zombies long before zombies were cool, and I'm getting bored with zombie games that are nothing but HEY SHOOT SOME ZOMBIES. TLOU gives the whole thing a fresh flavor (though I have to say a lot of that is because of the largely unexplored idea of cordyceps gone horribly wrong) and it doesn't fuck around with the "survival" part of survival horror either. Limited ammo, you have to craft most of your inventory, the clickers WILL ruin your whole day if you let them get near you, the whole bit.

While you could make a fair argument about the whole "gruff white male protecting helpless white female" thing, it plays around with that a lot by making Ellie perfectly capable of self-defense (especially when you take control of her towards the end) and helping you out ("hey asshole! *BRICK*"). In a lot of ways it does the whole thing better than Bioshock Infinite ever did, too.

It's easily one of the best games I've played this year, and easily one of the best reasons to get a PS3.

I haven't played LOU, and probably can't for a while - I'd have to get a PS3 first - but are people actually protesting about that? It just seems like a very paternal thing, from what I've seen. I'm not sure how that'd be interpreted as sexist.

Right. Sounds like people are being a little oversensitive - for me, the damsel-in-distress thing doesn't really apply when she has no prior training and is a child; it seems a bit much to expect her to instantly stick up for herself, especially in such a gritty setting. Thank you for the link, anyway.

To be fair, Ellie isn't the only female character in the game. The intro features Sarah, Joel's daughter, right at the onset of the mushroomhead outbreak. She dies. The first couple of chapters feature Tess, Joel's fellow smuggler (there was a 20 year timeskip after the intro) and while she's capable and tough, she dies too.

I guess people could make an argument for "women in refrigerators," then? I'd have to play it to see what the fuss is about, but thank you for the information - I hadn't been aware of any of this.

Heeeeeeh. I dunno, it sounds like grasping at straws. Tess dies, sure, but she's a certifiable badass beforehand, and she doesn't die in a small fashion.

Sarah died because if the soldier had shot, say, Tommy, it wouldn't have had the same emotional impact. It had to be a child, and there's something very innocent and soul-tugging about the father/daughter dynamic (that could just be me, though).

I'm also glad it was "Joel" and not "Joelette" because then the main character would be expected to have some kind of motherly instinct toward a child and ugh that is so annoying. I thought it gave a lot more to the story to have it be an old grumpy cold man who eventually dropped his guard.

Seriously, people just need something to bitch about. I thought Last of Us was fun and I'm still mulling over the ending. That right there is good. It was so good, I don't want a sequel. That's how good it was. Honest to God I am not being sarcastic.

AYRT

Yeah, I'm not seeing what any of the fuss is about. Seems like a gorgeous, well-written game in many ways, and I'm excited to play it at some point.
