Sims 3

[personal profile] shortysc22 2013-08-17 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I ADORED The Sims and The Sims 2 (I still play the Sims 2) and am contemplating getting the Sims 3 because it's part of the Humble Bundle special going on.

As someone who played The Sims and all of its expansion packs, but only played the original Sims 2, what things should I be aware of with the Sims 3? Any raves about it? Glitches?

Man, it can get super glitchy. Which I why I mod the hell out of it with debuggers and error catchers and various god power mods. It's fun as hell, though, even if it does get glitchy sometimes.

what are some of the mods you'd recommend then?

http://nraas.wikispaces.com/#The%20Mods

Overwatch, Errortrap, Master Controller (with add-ons) for lots of god powers. I also like Nraas Story Progression instead of EA's- less buggy and it controls the neighborhood better. I use a few other mods from that site just to enhance my game. They are super easy to dl and install. I just redownloaded the 35 I use earlier since I just got some new expansions.

Could you share your debugging mods?

It can be glitchy, and if you're the type to install custom content (especially non-official content) it can be very glitchy. The biggest difference I noticed in gameplay was that the graphics card that handled Sims 2 fine went buggers up with Sims 3, so you should be aware that it takes a lot more juice than previous Sims games.

Problems aside, though, there are several things I love about Sims 3. The ability to control how your Sims behave at their job, the emphasis on traits, the better graphics, the neighborhood interaction, the detailed hobbies, and giving birth at hospitals are just a few of the changes I really enjoyed (and still enjoy.) I don't even have any of the expansion packs for this one, and I still haven't gotten bored with it in four months. :)

Thanks for the heads up on it. I think the aspects you mentioned are reasons I might enjoy it. I've been playing The Sims 2 for years and whenever I get bored with it, I just mess with a new neighborhood.

I tried playing sims 3 "as is" a long time ago, but I didn't care for it as much as sims 2. Then a handful of months ago, a friend introduced me to the mods that were available and now I love the game. (Although it does still have glitches, in part, I think, because while I have more than the minimal requirements, it would do better with more RAM and a better graphics card.)

Yeah, Sims 2 plays fine on my computer, but this laptop is only a year old, so it meets the minimum requirements for Sims 3.

What are some of the mods you've found that you loved?

Re: Sims 3

[personal profile] meredith44 2013-08-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I am playing on a desktop, so I more than pass the minimum requirements. I'm saying that the minimum requirements aren't accurate. They're enough for you to play, but might not be enough for you to play. (Granted, I have so many families in my game, as I made all of my fandom favorites and they all spawned and stuff, so it is a lot for my poor computer to handle. I should probably try a smaller neighborhood. Oh, and in answer to your question to the other person, yes, the other sims age. And they have relationships with each other and have kids and all of that stuff instead of remaining static.)

As fingalsanteater said, I love NRAAS. (Here is more in-depth on a few of them.) I have...
- Career (but mostly because I wanted two of my fandom sims to have a psychology career, not for "normal" gameplay)
- Dreamer (because I like getting more wish options, as some of them are very long term)
- Error Trap (not really for gameplay, but for handling glitches)
- Master Controller (OMG, this was my first and I cannot imagine ever living without it)
- Mover (not essential, just a nice little perk)
- Overwatch (I just got this one, to try to clean my game up, and it seems to be working. Apparently there are a lot of abandoned cars)
- Retuner (this is for a few things, like setting pregnancy length in my non-active sims)
- Story Progression (I like NRAAS's story progression so much more than EA's. I love getting the updates about what my other sims in the neighborhood are doing. I don't know that I'd care as much if I was using the premade characters / hadn't entirely created my neighborhood. Although it is less glitchy, even then.)
- Traveler (only really important if you get the World Adventures expansion. I like what it tweaks. I also like the option of using other worlds for vacation destinations, not just the WA worlds.)
- Woohooer (Another mod I couldn't live without. I like the tweaking on relationships. I also like the "oops" pregnancy setting.)

I also have a couple of non-NRAAS mods. Like one that eliminates zombies from spawning (although I think I figured out how to do that via the NRAAS retuner mod, so that one isn't as crucial) and one that allows breastfeeding. There are so many mods out there, depending on what you want.

The three I most couldn't do without (and the three that made me love the game) are the Master Controller, Story Progression, and Woohooer. But I would be hard pressed to do without pretty much any of them.

As far as understanding minimum requirements, I understand. My old computer had the minimum requirements for Sims 2, but you spent half of the time waiting for it to load.

Thanks for the list of suggestions! I have a feeling I'm going to adjust to the game first before going into any of the expansions. Definitely looking forward to it (it's a birthday gift so I have to wait until Thursday to play it)

I would definitely recommend playing with the base game before going into the expansions. I still have only added World Adventures, Supernatural, and Late Night (despite owning more) and even then I haven't fully played with the aspects of any of them, despite having played the game for a long time. I'm too interested in the base game still.

Have fun! :D

Moderately glitchy, although Sims 2 could have some terrible glitches at points. Legacy families in Sims 3 seem to develop the curse of save-game death. Although townies outside of your family age independently by default, they all seem to converge on the same genetic profile. Sims 3 isn't as weird and quirky out of the box: no alien invasion and fewer weird achievement rewards.

What do you mean by save game death?

So the townies age, as opposed to being stuck forever, like The Sims 2?

Households take progressively longer to load and save with multiple generations.

That's a little disappointing, only because I'm big on creating Legacy families (it's the easiest way to build money, as opposed to just cheating.)

Re: Sims 3

I had to mod it with a debugger when I got Sims 3...seasons I think it is. Up until then I had the vanilla game with all expansions running fine but something in seasons blew the glitches wide open. I still get some really weird glitches and get locked out of families so I need to migrate to backups :/

But it is fun :D

Re: Sims 3

I'm not a huge fan of Sims 3.

Sims 3 works well for legacy houses, because you literally have one house in a neighborhood that's controllable. You can fill other houses with people, but they go off and do their own things (sometimes even getting married and having kids) while you're playing your main house. And you *can* (I've heard) switch to one of the other houses, but when you do, the house you were playing keeps on keeping on like all the others.

Also, I really find watching my Sims run to work or wherever they're going is just an unnecessary pain. I mean, it's kind of nice if you're in "downtown" and you can just walk to the business next door and not have to deal with load screens, but in general? Nope. Especially since the longer runs are when it seems to get the most laggy.

I also feel like it takes micromanaging to new, horrific levels.

The only things I really like is its vacation expansion and it's CAS and clothing options. But I like those a lot. If Sims 4 is essentially the Sims 2 gameplay with Sims 3 build-a-sim, I will be a happy, happy person.

Sorry, that got long, but I love Sims 2, and even have been working on a fannish neighborhood: http://fandomsims2.tumblr.com/ (Fandoms so far include pre-series Modern Family, pre-series Arrested Development, Growing Pains and, though I have no posts for them yet, Family Ties.)

Thanks for this! It helps to hear both sides of those who love it and then just the average playing issues. (I have a Harry Potter fannish neighborhood in both Sims 1 and 2, so I understand fandom series)

I'm still looking forward to seeing how Sims 3 plays and I think it's only $5 with the Humble Bundle so it's well worth the cost.
