It's because they're attractive. Reaper had a canon gay demon couple, and one even became an angel (Michael Ian Black)

Yes, but a lot of shows have actors even more attractive than they are, and I'm pretty sure the crazy doesn't run as deep. Plus, a handful of gay people as side characters over nine seasons isn't remarkable. Lovely, but it's not like Jimmy, Castiel's host, was gay, or Dean had a fling with a dude when he was a teenager (who turned out to be an incubus or something later, of course), or anything at all. That, I would understand.

Tony and Steve! I loved them! And they were definitely attractive...maybe slightly older than the Supernatural guys, but definitely not ugly and ancient or anything, at least to me.

Torchwood had a canon gay couple, both who are very attractive men. The fandom did have some tin hatting, but Supernatural seems like another level of crazy.
