What the hell is it with this show that brings out the frothing nut in people? I just don't understand. Back when I was still watching, and being entertained by occasional reads of Wincest, Destiel, and even J2 (hey, it was cute when I didn't know anyone actually believed in it), I had no conception of the depth of crazy going on behind the scenes. It's just your average paranormal show with attractive actors and mediocre writing. I'm so confused.

It's because they're attractive. Reaper had a canon gay demon couple, and one even became an angel (Michael Ian Black)

Woops *And they weren't popular because they weren't two young 'hawt' guys.

Yes, but a lot of shows have actors even more attractive than they are, and I'm pretty sure the crazy doesn't run as deep. Plus, a handful of gay people as side characters over nine seasons isn't remarkable. Lovely, but it's not like Jimmy, Castiel's host, was gay, or Dean had a fling with a dude when he was a teenager (who turned out to be an incubus or something later, of course), or anything at all. That, I would understand.

Tony and Steve! I loved them! And they were definitely attractive...maybe slightly older than the Supernatural guys, but definitely not ugly and ancient or anything, at least to me.

Torchwood had a canon gay couple, both who are very attractive men. The fandom did have some tin hatting, but Supernatural seems like another level of crazy.

I think part of it is because the show is self-aware of the legions of shippers, and does bait pretty strongly on the relationships, to degrees that can be uncomfortable if you're a shipper or if you're not, for different reasons. Part of it is because it's just been on SO DAMN LONG, and everyone has had a really long time to stew in the crazy and rub their crazy against everyone elses and in general just make everything really, really wacky. And part of it is a bunch of hot white guys.

That...makes a lot of sense, yeah. I know plenty of shows with hot white guys, but I can't think of another show - or another set of actors, for that matter - that caters so hardcore and shamelessly to the fandom. I suppose if you're a bit of an obsessive fan to begin with, they give you enough ammo to shoot yourself in the foot as many times as you like.

This makes me wonder if the absolute nutjob shit started when they did that story with the novelist and the conventions with the Sam/Dean shippers? Or was that a reaction to an already so far off the wall fanbase?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I was around back then and it was definitely a reaction to the fanbase. At least some of the ones that go to conventions because I heard about things, I never really go to the conventions myself though.

Crazy fangirls have been around since before Supernatural though, and they'll be around after.

I don't really think it's any worse then any other fandoms, I'm not saying Supernatural fandom isn't full of the crazy because it is, but I've seen just as disturbing/more disturbing stuff come from things like Doctor Who, Harry Potter, MLP, etc.

I think there's just a lot of attention paid to a vocal minority, and the show started catering to that minority because without them, the show wouldn't be on the air. Shows like Supernatural survive on dedicated cult followings.

But for every crazy fan there is a fan with a good sense of humor that doesn't take it seriously. I LOVE the show, but if I took it seriously I would have ditched it a long time ago. The fun of the show is I don't have to take it seriously, I can just sit down and watch some good looking men and some minor horror every week.
