I think part of it is because the show is self-aware of the legions of shippers, and does bait pretty strongly on the relationships, to degrees that can be uncomfortable if you're a shipper or if you're not, for different reasons. Part of it is because it's just been on SO DAMN LONG, and everyone has had a really long time to stew in the crazy and rub their crazy against everyone elses and in general just make everything really, really wacky. And part of it is a bunch of hot white guys.

That...makes a lot of sense, yeah. I know plenty of shows with hot white guys, but I can't think of another show - or another set of actors, for that matter - that caters so hardcore and shamelessly to the fandom. I suppose if you're a bit of an obsessive fan to begin with, they give you enough ammo to shoot yourself in the foot as many times as you like.

This makes me wonder if the absolute nutjob shit started when they did that story with the novelist and the conventions with the Sam/Dean shippers? Or was that a reaction to an already so far off the wall fanbase?

I was around back then and it was definitely a reaction to the fanbase. At least some of the ones that go to conventions because I heard about things, I never really go to the conventions myself though.

Crazy fangirls have been around since before Supernatural though, and they'll be around after.
