I ship it casually. I don't see any way it could happen on the show and I don't understand people who do. I think "societal norms" is almost meaninglessly vague. Other shows DO have assumed straight characters fall in love with members of the same sex. You can try and narrow it down to "oh but no male MAIN character who wears lots of plaid has ever had an EPIC ROMANCE after being straight for EIGHT seasons..." or whatever but I really, really don't care.

Best possible outcome is a series finale that doesn't explicitly rule it out, and that I can actually see happening. Pin your hopes on that OP.
