The problem is that the main characters are kids, and the actor have little experience and no formal training. If you throw them in a room with Britain's acting elite, they'd be completely overshadowed. Like Camelot, where that kid from Sweeney Todd is somehow expected to hold his own against Eva Green and Joseph Fiennes, and it's a complete disaster.
The adult characters are caricatures, because telling 10 year old Daniel Radcliffe to carry a story when, say, Kenneth Branagh is in the room giving the subtle, nuanced performance would be really unfair to both him and the viewers. And once you've decided to go that route, it would be strange to change it.
