She was an OTT panto-villain in the books too, if anything she underplayed the character.

I never thought she was that over-the-top in the books, although my view on her is 100% informed by Jim Dale's reading of her in the audiobooks as very quiet but determined crazy.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-17 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I don't recall her being the spastic Helena played her as.

It is a little-known fact that Bellatrix's favorite food was Dried Turkish Apricots. She carried a small bag of them with her always, and would often munch on them during raids. The only time she ever truly drew Voldemort's ire was on a raid taken shortly after her bag of apricots had been stolen. Her distress at so cruel a loss addled her wits and robbed her of concentration. She tried to appeal her punishment, but to no avail; she was told that lack of apricot is not a rational excuse for poor performance.

So it is that on the eve of her imprisonment, Bellatrix was packing a ready supply of Dried Turkish Apricots. When eaten in sufficient quantity, they would produce in her a sort of deranged euphoria, which goes a long way in explaining her obsession with them. It is in this way that she dealt with her ordeal, sneaking the tasty treats out of a special pouch she'd sown in her undergarments during those blessed intervals of respite. Nevertheless, consuming so very many of the delicious mind-altering treats permanently rewired her neural pathways, leaving her a mental mess. The reason for which her insanity could not be dealt with in either text or film, then, is quite obvious: it is patently absurd, and the audience would surely not have bought it.

[Picture is an image of the actress Helena Bonham Carter playing Bellatrix Lestrange from the Harry Potter movies. She has pale, grayish skin, long, wavy, wildly disheveled and tangled black hair, dark red lips, sunken, sort of bruised wide eyes and pretty much just a mad look about her. She is wearing dark clothes too.]

I think Helena did a horrible job playing Bellatrix. She was way too crazy and over the top for the tone of the later films and I couldn't take her seriously.

I'm baffled that everyone liked her performance.

When did she NOT do a horrible over-the-top performance? For me, everything she turns up in turns to shit. I loved Tim Burton movies once.

Haha. This. Although she was pretty normal in the Charlie & the Chocolate Factory remake.

I thought she was very good in Sweeney Todd.

She was great in Doctor Who "The Doctor's Wife", of course she was being played by Suranne Jones in that. HBC as played by Suranne Jones is pretty darn fabby.

I didn't enjoy every aspect of her performance (which stands true of all of her performances for me) but Bellatrix was always a bit over-the-top and her brand of crazy was always very in your face. Helena captured this, I think, and made other of Voldemort's followers and Voldemort himself that much more sinister in comparison.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of Helena as an actress and think her husband is doing her no favors by constantly casting her (and Johnny Depp) in roles that might be better suited to someone else.

I liked her. But I also like Alan Rickman as Snape, his questionable breakdown when he found Lily dead in DHP2 aside.

I liked her. It was like in fairytales - your stereotypical witch character, complete with OTT performance. The HP franchise has a lot of fairytale elements in it.

Ugh, I agree. She was kind of menacing in the book, but she was just ridiculous in the film. She didn't even look right. I can't understand why people liked her.

I don't blame the actress. I blame the director. That's what he wanted. He wanted an over the top villain. He got an over the top villain.

I didn't mind it so much since I think it is pretty close to how Bellatrix is post-Azkaban. I didn't really like it when she played Bellatrix the same in the flashback scene in GOF, though. I always felt that Bellatrix had pretty much lost it from being in Azkaban, not that she was always that way. She was always the sadist, but I think she would have been much more in control pre-Azkaban.

All the adult characters in the movies are one-dimensional and either overplayed or underplayed, and that's fine, imo.

The problem is that the main characters are kids, and the actor have little experience and no formal training. If you throw them in a room with Britain's acting elite, they'd be completely overshadowed. Like Camelot, where that kid from Sweeney Todd is somehow expected to hold his own against Eva Green and Joseph Fiennes, and it's a complete disaster.

The adult characters are caricatures, because telling 10 year old Daniel Radcliffe to carry a story when, say, Kenneth Branagh is in the room giving the subtle, nuanced performance would be really unfair to both him and the viewers. And once you've decided to go that route, it would be strange to change it.

I agree. She played Bellatrix as this wacky villain when in the books she was kind of scary and unpredictable.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
OMG same. If I recall correctly she was actually kind of calm and collected and kind of freaky as shit in the books, with heavily lidded eyes and long straight hair. They just made her into a freak, whereas she was this cold and creepy psychopath in the books.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
The only time I liked her in the movie was when she was playing Hermione dressed up as Bellatrix. (I don't like Emma Watson, either, so the fact that she made me like BOTH of them for .5 seconds just slays me.)

I didn't enjoy her performance either (although to be honest I'm not the biggest fan of several of the films, so my views should always been taken with a pinch of sald) but it was the accent she used that really bothered me- she sounded too close to her 'Mrs Lovett' in my opinion- particularly when juxtaposed with Narcissa (she of the badger striped hair...*sigh*) - it was like along with Bellatrix's sanity she'd lost her aristocratic tones in Azkaban and it bothered me- threw me out of the story.

(I do agree with some of the comments though- I feel in the book Bellatrix was absolutely barking crazy, but there was just something about the film performance that didn't work for me- don't know whether it was 'too weird' or 'not unhinged enough'- I think it was the latter. From what I recall of the films often she seemed to have too precise an understanding of precisely what she was doing, at the same time acting like she was out of control.)

Are you kidding? Everyone I knew hated her. Outside the scene with Hermione anyway. That scene was probably her best. Otherwise? Ew no.
