I'm late to the party but here goes. I ship Dean/Cas. I started watching the show towards the end of S6 (and caught up on the rest), and I saw the basis for it pretty much from S4 onwards. I didn't really start actively shipping it, though, until 620. And S7 was a hard time to ship Dean/Cas.

But then S8 happened. And all of a sudden, there were shippers galore again. Why? Well, it started with the hug. But there was also Dean saying he needed Cas and praying to him and basically reciprocating the huge sacrifices Cas had made for him, which were the basis of the ship prior to that.

Dean/Cas might have only ever been a "subtext" non-canon slash ship. I was fine with it being that. But in S8, the writers started dropping "hints." There had always been queer-baiting, but this went beyond that. Dean being visibly flustered when a guy hit on him. Dean turning down sex with a girl. Numerous interspecies relationship, some heterosexual, some not. Dean saying he needed Cas, and looking like he meant it.

Personally, even after all that, I don't think Dean/Cas is going to become canon. But a lot of people do. And I personally do believe that Dean could be bi and Dean/Cas COULD be canon, with nothing but the foundation the show has already lain.

But I also don't think it's ever going to happen. Why? Because of jokes. Because of blatant queer-baiting, both by the writers and the actors. I don't know if they mean it to be homophobic, but that's what it comes off as. That being gay is hilarious and fine to make fun of, but would never be srs bsns.

I fully believe that TPTB could make Dean/Cas canon, if they wanted to. But I also don't think that they ever will.

And the thing is - had they just left it alone, just left it a subtext-only ship with no hope of being canon, that would've been fine.

But what their queer-baiting has done has given us hope. Us, the shippers, so many of whom are just like OP.

So I feel you, OP. I'm not quite clinging to the delusion myself any longer, but I can certainly understand why you are. And it's not because you're crazy or a bad person. It's because the writers have screwed with us.

I honestly don't think they're making of being homosexual, they're making fun of the fan wank. The episode where they meet Becky and discover "Wincest" online? The Real Ghostbusters, where they meet their "alter egos" who are an actual committed couple. I'm sure somewhere down the line there will be some sort of nod towards an angel (one of the fallen) finding himself in a relationship with a male hunter & Dean will make some sort of "you serious?" face and they'll move on.
I don't think Destiel will ever become canon, just like I don't believe my ship will ever become permanent canon (not mentioning because I just don't want the backlash). I seriously believe in my heart that none of these three are going to end up with the happy ending 2.5 kids, loving partner and the picket fence. That's not who they are.
