I personally like the approach Ni no Kuni took -- you pay a fine when you die and you can continue without losing any of your progress, just a bit of money. Which still hurts and that's good, in my opinion, but is a nice way to prevent rage-quitting.

This is the same approach most MMOs take as well - when you die your armor and weapons (or your "soul") take damage that you'll need to repair at some point.

Yeah, except for City of Heroes that made you get an XP fault. That was the worst.

Shin Megami Tensei IV does too. But I'm stingy in those games unless I have a crapton of money.

Dragon Quest does this too, more or less. (You're respawned at the last point you saved, but any progress except your actual location and your cash stays as it was.) But, it's really expensive, I really don't like losing money, so unless it's been a REALLY long time since I last saved, I'll just reset, and do it over again, since even the off chance I won't run into as many enemies and thus won't make as much money usually costs me less. >_>
