The "never die" option might be taking it a bit far, but there is no problem with playing on Easy. I play a lot of games on Easy mode. :|

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't even afford to play games any more. I just watch 'Let's Plays' on YouTube and make out like I've played them myself, so you're better than me in that regard.

[personal profile] miffthefox 2013-08-18 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I do this too. I don't make any claim to be a gamer.

I personally like the approach Ni no Kuni took -- you pay a fine when you die and you can continue without losing any of your progress, just a bit of money. Which still hurts and that's good, in my opinion, but is a nice way to prevent rage-quitting.

Although I like to push myself to do better for the sense of accomplishment (I have a fear of failure and issues with perfectionism so it's my way of coping, I guess?) I also partially play games for the story and exploration, so I completely understand this mindset. There's absolutely nothing wrong with playing games for the challenge either, but I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying games in a different way than what's the "norm." After all, I doubt everyone watches film for the same reason, or plays, or reads books, or listens to music, etc. Games should be the same way.

That being said I gotta admit I winced at the idea of a "never die" option. I don't mind it when it's just simply built into the game (like Kirby's Epic Yarn, or even games where the whole point is just exploration like some indie titles have been doing), but I guess it's the idea of altering a game that is supposed to present a challenge to completely take a gameplay element away that bothers me? I'm sure it's partially my own bias in there, but...IDK. I don't think games should necessarily try to please all different gaming tastes because it's impossible to please everyone.

Eh, I recently finished Fire Emblem Awakening on Normal/Casual. I regret not pairing this with at least Hard, but even so, playing on Casual is met with much disdain, supposedly. But eh, I find it way too annoying to do my first run with constant restarting when a unit dies.

Plus, I I almost never play action and horror games and only watch Let's plays of them, because I lack the patience and in the last case, the courage for them.

There is no shame in this. It's your game. Play it the way you want to play it. Just because you're not TEH HARDCOREZ doesn't make you any less of a gamer. You like video games. You play them. That's it.
nailtek: ([Mass Effect] Kasumi)

[personal profile] nailtek 2013-08-18 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I always play games on the easiest difficulty because, as much as I like video games, I simply am not actually any good at them. I also play a lot of story-heavy games so I like to invest myself into the story without worrying about resurrecting teammates or restarting from saves every five minutes.
There's no shame in it, despite what anyone tries to say otherwise! What's important is that you actually enjoy playing the game! :3

I usually play on normal. Rarely do I play on anything higher than that. The exceptions are old-school FPS games like Doom, which I play in their hardest settings (short of Nightmare mode which, in Doom's case, is just Ultraviolence with a few twists.)

Though I am strongly considering playing through The Last Of Us on hard mode next time.

Wow, did I make this secret in my sleep? I LOVE playing video games, but always play though in the easiest level.

I've never gotten any flack for it, but the only gamers I hang around with are also my friends, so they're cool about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I do this too, mostly. Because I just don't have time to be screwing around with hard mode.

I think I would probably be better if I played on hard mode, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think this is bad OP, every once in a while I play easy mode first if I'm feeling uncertain. I usually go for normal and I never touch hard because I usually wouldn't want to do hard on my first playthrough, and by the time I do another playthrough it's been too long for me to be confident enough to try it.

I want a game to be challenging enough but not to the point that I have to do the same battles for forever and feel like rage quitting. I like gameplay but I also like story and feeling accomplished, even if my accomplishment wasn't as difficult.

I totally understand; I play games on easy mode if I'm frustrated with a game or not having fun. Because I personally play games to have fun, and for the story involved. No shame in that, IMO, screw the gaming community.

I play only for my own entertainment and mostly because I like the story (I play mostly JRPGs) so yeah, a never-die option would be fine with me. I never say I'm a gamer, though; I'm just a person who sometimes plays games.
sootyowl: (Default)

[personal profile] sootyowl 2013-08-18 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I play games generally on casual or normal. I'd be fine with the whole "no dying" option, as long as it was an option people could choose to use. Games are meant to be enjoyed in my eyes, so the more people who can enjoy a game, the better :D

Sometimes I don't know why I play games were dying is something that always happens. I'm not a grinder, but I get sucked into games (like SMT IV) were dying is like a requirement to win.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm even worse, I also cheat in games. Especially in games I'm not good at or on additional playthroughs. Even if it wasn't that hard, I couldn't really be bothered to kill all those Darkspawn floods in the Deep Roads in DA:O again and again just because I wanted to try a different origin. And really, who cares? Unless it's an online game, nobody is hurt by any of it. It's my enjoyment and my pasttime. I will not cut back on the enjoyment of a game just because I'm not badass enough. Some people think it's only enjoyable when it's challenging - well go ahead, it's your game. But don't tell me how I'm supposed to enjoy a game I paid for with my own money.

I play the easiest settings always. Bad wrists, poor reflexes. I straight up say that in fandoms, too, and if they don't like it, fuck em.

It's my game and life is too short to play by someone else's rules.

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-08-18 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the difficulty selection screen of a videogame. It has the options: "Easy", "Medium", and "Hard".]

If it's an option, I always play games on the easy setting. I'm just not that good and I don't find overly difficult challenges in games to be fun. I play games more for the storyline and visuals than the actual gameplay. In fact, I really wish there was a "never die" option for all games.

Secret because: I'd get laughed out of the gamer fandom if I ever admitted this.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's anything wrong with this. I'm a pretty hardcore gamer (the type that likes to play things on Nightmare difficulty, beat all the insanely hard secret bosses, level/equip grind for hours, etc.) and I play games on Easy all the time. Generally for single-player games I do the first playthrough on the easiest difficulty, and then play again on the hardest setting if I enjoyed the story/characters enough to warrant a replay.

The "very easy" option that many games have these days practically is a "never die" mode, though.

I think the only games I can play beyond "easy" are like, Tetris and Sudoku.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-18 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Cryptic-crossword style gameplay in puzzlesolving games and military god mode sue on combat games killed gaming for me. I do it to relax, not to get all raged up like the current crop of gaming fanboys. I used to happily play the first Sonic game on easy just for the fun of it. Now it seems like game creators are just given license to dick with customers for the hell of it. And don't get me started on always-on internet gaming. Fuck that for a game of skittles.

I've never gone beyond the "normal" mode. I just don't see the fun in getting anxiety attacks tying to keep yourself alive. I mostly play for the story anyway.
