I usually play story heavy games on easy mode, first, because they're usually really long and I just want to enjoy the story without taking a million and a half hours to get through it once.
If I feel like stepping up the difficulty later, I will.

I tend to play shorter, more classic games (like your Megamans and your Contras and such) on normal or hard, though.
