But bad sex scenes from evident virgins are part of the fun of fanfic.

See also:

Descriptions of the penis hitting the clit during penetration

I'd like to live in those writers' worlds.

To be fair, the clitoris is much more than just the little outer nub-button. Not that those writers are all necessarily referring to that much knowledge of female anatomy.

lol, this. any time i read a description like that, i assume the author is either sexually inexperienced to varying degrees, or trolling in the deep.

Hehe, trolling in the derp.

"Descriptions of the penis hitting the clit during penetration."

That one's actually possible for many women. It just depends on the size of the clitoris and the angle of both bodies involved.

Not the way I've seen it written. ;)

That actually makes me wonder because I'm a virgin and I occasionally write porn, but I get a generally positive reviews on it? I mean, I'm wondering if there's a direct correlation between how good you're at sex and how good you are at writing porn. Basic anatomy notwithstanding.

I think personal experience is highly valuable, but I also think if you read a lot of good sex scenes you can write pretty good sex scenes without much experience. Determining which scenes you read are good and which aren't might be trickier though.

A virgin - even virgins who don't have the anatomy of either party involved - can write good sex scenes if they 1) take the time to do some research on sex and writing-about-sex sites, 2) logic out what's likely to be pleasurable and what isn't, and 3) tactfully hide their ignorance by choosing to gloss over or ignore any part of it that they're unsure about.

Hell, I'm not a virgin, and I've been writing smut for...almost a decade now? And I still just the other day had to look up how far a male could reasonably shoot his cum - because I don't have a penis and neither does my partner. The internet helps a lot in this department, and you can easily get away with not being physically experienced with the particular act you're describing if you're smart about it. I mean, it's not like JKR had to actually practice magic and fight a dragon to write Harry Potter - you're only ever limited by your skill as a writer.

Nope. I've known people who've had loads of sex, but can't write a sex scene worth beans.

There's nothing wrong with being a virgin and writing sex scenes, as long as you do research to make sure that what you're attempting isn't anatomically incorrect/impossible. (Like the OP's complaint, or the stubborn belief that the hymen is located deep in the vagina (hint: it's not)). It also helps if you're willing to self-experiment when applicable to at least get an idea of the sensations as a baseline.

It's like anything else. If you're not sure about something, look it up. Research is your friend.

I'm also a virgin and also get really positive feedback on smut I've written. More than a friend of mine who has been married for years and purports to be having pretty great sex. I chalk it up to reading a lot. A LOT. Good, bad, everything in between - even reading bad smut will give you an idea of what not to write.

I think there's an overarching style that also comes into play - some people just can't get past the "And then. And then. And then" descriptions in writing, and the smut tends to follow.

Real talk here:

I find both the flooding and the penetrating the cervix thing super duper hot. But because it's so fucking awful. I don't know maybe it's self hate. It's okay cervix, I would never actually do that to you.

It just seems really primal and aggressive and fucking hot, man.

OP: For what it's worth . . .

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
There's a Haruhi Suzumiya fic that puts a rather fun spin on this: Haruhi has altered humanity to make sex more like in hentai manga, with cervical penetration, cum inflation, and so on. It's a fun, self-aware spin on a lot of tropes that normally irritate me. http://anime.adultfanfiction.net/story.php?no=600052101

Just noticed that I said "fun spin" twice. This is what happens when I try to type with a head cold.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Same... it usually goes together with rough sex or noncon so I guess it's more about kink than wanting things realistic. It's fiction after all.
