Guilty pleasure games?

[personal profile] cakemage 2013-08-18 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
So tell me, f!s, what are your gaming guilty pleasures? Games that you objectively know aren't very good, or may even be pretty terrible, but somehow they just hit all the right notes for you and make you feel stupidly happy when you play them?

At the top of my list is Final Fantasy X-2. It's as idiotic and cheesy as they come, but it's pretty, mindless fun and kind of refreshing in that it doesn't take itself too seriously. Also, Paine is hot.

Star Fox Adventure is truly a horrible game in many ways, and yet I still find myself digging it out every so often. The gameplay can be fun and the environments are, for the most part, pretty and interesting. Also, being able to thwack Tricky over and over is kind of therapeutic, and is well worth getting roasted when he gets fed up with it. Gods, I hate that little bastard.

Rogue Galaxy is pretty standard and uninteresting fantasy RPG fare as far as plot and character development go, it definitely drags in places, there are a bunch of incredibly cheesy "emotional" scenes and the ending is so cliched and stupid that it hurts, but it definitely has its redeeming characteristics. For instance, the environments and character designs are gorgeous, the special/combo attacks are inventive and often hilarious, and you join up with space pirates and travel from planet to planet in a space galleon and there is nothing not awesome about that.

So those are my guilty pleasure games. What're yours?

Princess Maker.

Not because it's poorly made. It's actually really, really good.

But there's that whole incest ending. And the nudity cheat. And yeah.

Agreed, though I'd forgotten about the incest ending. I usually have her marry either the dragon boy or the prince.

Ahhh I still haven't played the games! I talked to nursejoy about them, but I kept forgetting to play them. I love the anime so much. I really need to get focused and play them.

Thanks anon, for reminding me! :)

Final Fantasy X-2 is the shit. I rolled my eyes at the campiness, but the battle system is SO FUN. I can't wait to play it in HD!

I don't call anything a guilty pleasure really, but if I did that game would be up there. Same with Call of Duty. Maybe MGS4 and MG Rising too, but I'm shameless about what I like no matter how unpopular it may be.

Pfft, there is no need to be ashamed of Metal Gear. NONE.

And the battle system in X-2 was wonderful. I almost forgot about the HD remakes and now I'm all excited again.

Champions of Norrath. It's about one of the blandest fantasy RPGs in existence. It's really not a great game. But it has a limited character creation (race and sex choice plus a few faces and hairstyles, not much) and an offline-co-op option and it's just so much fun playing it with a friend. We have whole plotlines for our generic heroes. It's very amusing.

At the moment, I'm playing a Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger Nintendo DS game. It's something for little kids, like the whole franchise in general, but it's a kind of feelgood thing for me. Some of the minigames are actually fun, easy as they are.

Agreed on FFX-2. (Well, I agree that I enjoy it. I don't feel particularly guilty about it.) I loved the dress spheres; they were lots of fun and I actually really enjoyed seeing the characters change clothes so often. I'll always have a thing for Paine, Baralai and Gippal too. (Not to mention Baralai/Gippal and Rikku/Paine.) Lots of fond memories of that game, tbh.

Star Ocean 3. The story is alright, the characters are ridiculously campy, the voice acting borders on atrocious. But goddamn it the combat system is so fucking fun.

Blood Omen 2. I can't even claim that the gameplay is fun, but I love the atmosphere of it so much that I have to go back and replay it every once in a while.

Oblivion. Potato faces everywhere, and I only own it on the PS3 so no leveling for me unless I want to keep a fucking spreadsheet handy. But I loved the shit out of KotN and I like to replay it every once in a while.

For all its flaws (and I will concede that there are many), Oblivion isn't a guilty pleasure for me, 'cause I'm not even a little embarrassed by how much I love it, doughy faces and all. I know what you mean about leveling, though. I had it on PS3 before getting it for the PC, and until I started cheating like hell I kept my characters at like, level five for the duration of the game. I mostly just play it on PC now, though, which opened vast new cheating opportunities for me, not to mention it reminded me of the fun of installing custom content. Anyway, I love the Knights of the Nine expansion too, but Shivering Isles is hands-down my favorite expansion of any game ever.

oh my gosh, I hear you on SO3. I spent so many hours on that game (for battle trophies) that my emotional ties are pretty strong, but even back then I was aware of how seriously anime it was. then years passed and I thought "well MAYBE it wasn't as bad as I thought" and I put the disc back in and the intro was even more awkward than I remembered. that said, playing SO4 was so bad that by time I was done, I had a new appreciation for SO3.

Eternal Eyes for the PlayStation.

It's a Tactical RPG game with mons shoved in. I keep getting sidetracked and not finishing it, but apparently it's not very long?

It has the most clichéd plot and generic characters ever (oh no, a goddess of destruction is being summoned by Evil Dude and his Crazy Sadisstic Giggling Sidekick; our orphan hero has this unknown power that can stop him! Also, puppets coming to life from gems! And that's it.), and it takes between 30 seconds and one minute to load and save each save file.

But I really like the music and the art of the mons' portraits.

Also, check out the awesome opening!

I still have a soft spot for the edutainment games from my childhood, particularly the Learning Company/Super Solvers ones. If I still had them, I would totally play the shit out of Gizmos & Gadgets, Operation Neptune, or Zoombinis.

Same here! I loved playing those; my favorite ones were Operation Neptune and Midnight Rescue. It was so much fun jumping around and taking pictures of those robots.

Yes!!!! Me too. I've spent so many hours on that game, I'm ashamed. It is just so addictive. Once I start playing, the hours just melt away. I just love entering contests and making outfits for myself, clients, and workers. I just love it.

There was a Barbie game where you took care of horses and rode them around on really small(and kind of crap) little routes around your stable and I loved it, if it still worked on my PC I'd play it now.

Count me among the people who like FFX-2! Sure, it's got some full-on cheese (Yuna's song and it's effects in chapter 4? Excuse me?), but it's also just so...CUTE and FUN! I really enjoyed it. But you won't catch me admitting that to anyone.

My other guilty pleasure is...the Dark Angel game. It's actually got some really good stealth stuff in it, I swear. <.< >.>

Land of the Dead, that crappy budget game that came out a couple years ago. Got one of the most scathing reviews I've ever seen, and yet I fucking love it.

Shogo: Mobile Armor Division is basically a shooter with mechas, and the graphics were iffy even by 1998 standards, some of the voice acting isn't exactly great, but most of it is fairly decent. And really, the only reason I consider it to be a guilty pleasure is because it's so often panned by people who hate Monolith Productions. Personally, I love it so much that it's like a form of nostalgic comfort food for me, since it's the first thing I played when I was getting back into gaming as a teenager. Ought to see if I can find my copy anywhere...
