I never lose my love for something and still keep the fic in my bookmarks, but when the fandoms for these things die, there's not a whole lot to do but move on to something that *is* active.

I've written fic for a fandom that was active until last year. I didn't want to stop writing, but I'm lucky if people are still interested in reading them.

I basically came to say the same thing. I still love the source material, have fic ideas and love the characters I loved when I was in the fandom. But I usually only get involved in a fandom if it's part of a series, as a way to speculate and bridge the gap between installments. Once the series is over, the fandoms die down and I lose interest in the fandom. To me, fandom and source are totally separate, and saying you've "moved on" is not the same as saying you've "grown out of" a particular thing. Not every fandom has the lasting power of something like Lord of the Rings, and why stick around just to talk to yourself and the crazies who think they're soul-married to fictional characters?

Even a long-lasting fandom like LotR has it's ups and downs.

It had a huge upswing in activity when the LotR movies came out. It's had another recently because of The Hobbit, I'd bet. But there was probably a lull in between those too, where only the stubborn long-term fans, and the crazies were still active.

Not in the fandom, but I always wondered how many people were mostly in it for the movies, just because it seemed as soon as the movies stopped coming out, the same "oh I read LOTR when I was in diapers!" people were all "wait, who the hell is this Gandalf guy?" I exaggerate of course, but it did seem rather convenient...

I can really only speak for myself, though I suspect a good number of others had similar experiences.

What I do know is that LotR is an old fandom, and has fans who were fans of the books long before the movies, who probably were glad the movies gave them places like OneRing.net to go and discuss stuff about the books.

I'm not the sort of fan who can go year in, year out on discussion and meta. I'm very much a fanfic reader, and when fanfic slows down, I am prone to getting distracted and wandering off.

But I don't look back on any of my fandoms as childish, but that may be because all my fannish experience onine happened after I reached adulthood - I got my own computer when I was 23, so all my fandoms are adult fandoms. I remember them fondly, even if I have no interest in returning to them.

I wouldn't say I was stubborn :) Tolkien's been my only fandom in decades. I wasn't aware fanfic existed until about 07, so when I started writing and posting, I was told everything had long died down, but the archive I posted on was always busy, and I saw a lot of activity on LJ.
I thought to see a huge upswing when the first Hobbit film was released, and I didn't - until I realised that most of it was happening on Tumblr. :)

I got invested in writing a long series (and still am) and my view is as long as I have stories to tell, I'll write them. I don't think though, that after so many decades, the Tolkien fandom will ever really die. If it was slow when I found it, I honestly didn't notice -- I suppose had I come from another fandom like Harry Potter I might have seen the difference.
