IKR? I revisit from time to time, but I've never completely dropped one.

I will move on from fandoms, but I don't abandon them. I save all my bookmarks from them, but put them in my retired folder. And then nostalgically go back and re-read them. :3

I don't know, there's some things that I do just lose interest in over time, but I mostly agree.

For me, you lose some of the intensity, maybe, but the interest and the affection doesn't really go away in most cases

Some people even get weird if you mention old fandoms. Maybe some of it is embarrassment? I've also discovered there's fandoms you're not supposed to admit to still being in.

I still think about things I loved as a kid. But not everyone's like that; I think some people get caught up in the moment, as opposed to already being caught up. Maybe that's also the difference. I wouldn't say I still love things I read or watched at eight years old, but I still know what they meant to me and still have a soft spot for them because of it.

I'm still willing to read fic for my "former" fandoms long after I'm in the super-obsessive/fic-writing/meta-ing stage, so I don't ever leave fandoms completely. Though if it's a very small/old fandom it's a lot harder for me to stay interested.

I never lose my love for something and still keep the fic in my bookmarks, but when the fandoms for these things die, there's not a whole lot to do but move on to something that *is* active.

I've written fic for a fandom that was active until last year. I didn't want to stop writing, but I'm lucky if people are still interested in reading them.

I'll generally have my fill of a fandom and then move on, but I'll always enjoy the show, and may even revisit to read or write fic again. I kind of understand the idea of getting completely burned out on an interest though, especially if you spent a lot of time in one fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
When I say I "move on" from a fandom I don't mean that I erase or forget everything from that fandom. I just...move on. I lose interest in anything more or exploring or watching or whatever. I'll still re-read some of my fav fic and watch fav fanvids, but overall I've moved on to a new fandom interest.

I revisit old fandoms from time to time but, I dunno. With huge ones I tend to get burned out after a while and go through an awkward in between phase until I find my next big obsession.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it's like a break up with someone you loved. You can remember the good times and somewhere in you is still the love, but overall it's become a bitter angry frustrating relationship and you know it's time for everyone involved to move on. You don't forget or abandon, but it's not the fun-filled lovefest anymore. It happens.

I like the word kaijinscendre said with retired. I don't completely lose interest of old fandoms, I just retire them. I usually have a monogamous relationship with fandoms and usually it lasts- at most- a year before I become enamored with a new series and I have to read all the fic for it.
I do a terrible job saving good fics, though.

I totally had a summer affair with Tiger & Bunny though

On the one hand, yeah, I agree. If I'm into something enough to think of myself as part of the fandom, it's going to stick around with me in some small way, even if I stop actively participating in the fandom.

On the other hand, I have had to say I 'moved on' once or twice, because it's easier to say that than 'someone turned out to be such an all-pervasive toxic influence on me that I needed to completely cut out that section of my life, including a fandom, in order to be free of it.'
Which I suspect is probably not what you're talking about here, but there you go.

I've been in fandom for...about 15 years now, in one way or another.

I've moved on, in some ways, because things end, they become a lot less active and it's just not the same vibe anymore. I still LIKE those things, but I'm just not so actively involved in them anymore.

For example, I was very much into Marvel's Generation X when I first got online, but that comic has been dead as a dodo for years. Sure, I'll search new art every blue moon or so, but there's just not much out there. I was also ver much into the X-Files, and a Mulder/Krycek shipper, but I think I honestly read all the decent fic there was at some point, and never really felt the need to re-read. I already had that experience.

Those fandoms are still in my heart, in a way, but but it's no longer part of my active fandom experience.

Yeah, I understand. I can never just drop a thing, especially if I really enjoyed it. Oftentimes I'll even be looking for new material months after a thing has stopped--as in, no more canon. I can't help it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, moving on from my old fandom was a bit like how I moved on from sword-and-sorcery fantasy. I read one story about brave heroes slaying orcs, and it was great. I read two stories about brave heroes slaying orcs, and they were great. I read a hundred stories about brave heroes slaying orcs, and I started rooting for the orcs. My fandom was a bit more varied, but I was still seeing the same ideas over and over, and it just got repetitive.

I don't completely lose interest, I just gain more interest in something else. There's quite a few I'll revisit from time to time.

I can get burned out on a fandom or be distracted by another, but I never completely leave a fandom behind. I always go back and reread fic or checkout fanart. Fandoms of yesteryear's never truly leave me.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I mean, I have older fandoms that I was crazy over, but now I'm not really interested in making fic or art or whatever for them. But I still go through these phases of re-watching the shows or browsing for fics/looking for interesting discussions online to read/etc. I didn't stop loving them, I just got distracted by some other shiny fandom.

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2013-08-20 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I have a sort of fandom friend who will be intensely obsessed with ONE thing and ONE thing only and it is the BEST thing ever and all they want to talk about why it's the BEST thing ever and then they just drop it like a hot potato for something else and is suddenly almost disdainful of it and kind of derisive towards me if I casually mention it.

I just don't get how you can be so passionate about something and identify with it so strongly then just start actively disliking it and mocking it.

Eh, I can understand wanting to "move on" from a fandom if the overall experience just isn't worth it or it has some pretty bad memories.

That said, I'll occasionally revisit some old favorites that I'm no longer head over heels for -like Mass Effect, to name an example- and enjoy some old classics and find the occasional new awesome fan art... but the love isn't really the same as it was and I don't feel *quite* as passionate about it.

If that makes any sense.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
For me, there are two types of fandoms:
The ones I really love and the ones I like but don't care that much about.

I can't "move on" from the first ones and even if they aren't as active as they were, I still search for fic/art even years after and sometimes I get the urge to write something (and I do so while thinking no one will read it... and then someone proves me wrong and that makes my day, because Yay! I'm not the only one who still loves this fandom).

The others are fandoms I enjoy, but I never participate in them much and even if sometimes I feel like reading/writing something about them, with one or two is more than enough. And as soon as the canon is over, the little interest I had in them disappears.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I have but...well. I obssess over something for a time [usually a year or more for being *in* a fandom] then I just...get bored, and the enthusiasm never really comes back. -shrugs-

Once I love something, I almost always continue to love it indefinitely. It might not consume the majority of my fannish attention after a while, though. I'll move on to other things to be immediately obsessed with, while always keeping my love of other things that affected me or really drew me in. :)

[Picture is black text over a light cream blank background.]

I find it weird when people "move on" from a fandom. Most works that I enjoy enough to obsess over for any length of time tend to stay with me for good. The characters, the settings, the themes, everything. It seems strange to me to just forget something you claim to have liked so much. I guess people's interests change, but I just can't imagine abandoning anything like that completely.

Maybe I'm just too obsessive.
