(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)For a lot of people, in my experience, they don't associate "gypsy" with real people anymore because of all that same romanticism, and aren't actually trying to be racist weirdos when they say "gypped". They just think of Hunchback of Notre Dame, which, if you're going to ask me what offended me more, I wrote a paper in college about the mindless racism in that movie. It was a long paper. It quickly descended into ranting, not going to lie.
My cousin is actually pretty psyched over the name, oddly enough. At least someone is using the word in a positive way, for once, in his mind.

I think there's a cultural difference here. In the UK, "gypsy" is definitely associated with real people, and it's definitely a slur, though not as bad as "gyppo". On the other hand, I wouldn't have known what "gypped" meant, it's not a term I've ever heard before.
