Yeah, I think it is in bad taste. And I am so sick of people defending it by saying that Del Toro named it after the motor engine of a British plane from the 1920s and had nooooooo idea of the slur gipsy.

So he knows about an obscure engine from the 20s but not a racial slur that has been used for at least a century?

(Reposting because I accidentally replied to the wrong thing)
I'm not even in the fandom, and I saw a lot of talk about this on tumblr (and a lot of yelling about "ZOMG WW2 HISTORY SO IT'S NOT RACIST" which is, um.) because Pacific Rim is fucking everywhere.

But I think one of the creators even replied to these concerns in a non-terrible way, and that's where the wank died?
(Unless I'm confusing this with another fandom.)

Well, it's a weird story, apparently. Gipsy Danger was named after an aircraft engine (something with a military plane, I forget), which in the world of Pacific Rim makes sense. Someone named it after their favourite plane without thinking about how the original got its name. When the original came about, there was a lot of romanticism going on with Romani and traveler types. (Kind of like the brief French rage where everyone was naming their girls things like Brigitte and Claudette, etc.)

For a lot of people, in my experience, they don't associate "gypsy" with real people anymore because of all that same romanticism, and aren't actually trying to be racist weirdos when they say "gypped". They just think of Hunchback of Notre Dame, which, if you're going to ask me what offended me more, I wrote a paper in college about the mindless racism in that movie. It was a long paper. It quickly descended into ranting, not going to lie.

My cousin is actually pretty psyched over the name, oddly enough. At least someone is using the word in a positive way, for once, in his mind.

...isn't the slur 'gypsy' though? What's wrong with using 'Gipsy', a name for a part of a GIANT MACHINE, as part of a name for a GIANT MACHINE in the movie? Yeah, they're close, but I don't get why del Toro would purposely use the slur version for the Jaeger anyway...

Well, there's the fact that a lot of people don't even know that "gypsy" is considered offensive. It's still pretty much a commonly used word, especially in America, where there isn't as much of a history with the Romany culture.

There's the fact that, mm, yeah, no, it has been discussed, fairly often, in plenty of places.

There's the fact that the writer, when it was brought to his attention, very sincerely apologized because, like a lot of folks, he had no idea that it was considered a slur, and intended to name the Jaeger after an old airplane engine (which in turn, I think, was named after a moth). He didn't try to defend or excuse his choice--he was sincerely sorry that he'd unknowingly used a word that people consider offensive to name one of the major components of the movie.

But...y'know, outrage works too.
