Near as I can tell, even before the fact that the majority of the fans have no idea that "gypsy" is considered a slur by many people, and that (from what I've heard) it is even the preferred/reclaimed term for many of the Romani people, the fact that the creators admitted to a mistake and apologized for it tends to put out the flames of wank.
