Re: Since when is gypsy a slur?

There are lots of minority groups who have reclaimed slurs, doesn't mean it's okay for other people to use them.

I think it's a cultural thing as well though. IDK how many people in these discussions are ESL or come from countries with somewhat significant Romani population, but where I'm from, the word that translates to "gypsy" is pretty much the worst slur you can call a Romani person and it really threw me to see English-speaking people using "gypsy" at first.

This right here.

In this case it isn't reclaiming, it is an inuit/eskimo thing. All gypsies are romani (apart from the irish ones, but lets keep it simple), but not all romani are gypsies. Gypsies are a distinct subset and taking away their identity and branding it a slur is called erasure, which is a much bigger crime.

Except it's considerably more complicated than that - which is why there isn't actually a "right" answer.

Yes, but if some of the group introduces themselves as gypsies - you can't get pissed that some people figure "oh the group is called gypsies" because they haven't heard it used as a slur, just as a name.

Equally confused by the ...what do you called them, cultural social groups for X ethnicity, and some of them use the word Gypsy.

So of course people are going to be confused, especially when the word is used for other things as well.
