There's the fact that, mm, yeah, no, it has been discussed, fairly often, in plenty of places.
There's the fact that the writer, when it was brought to his attention, very sincerely apologized because, like a lot of folks, he had no idea that it was considered a slur, and intended to name the Jaeger after an old airplane engine (which in turn, I think, was named after a moth). He didn't try to defend or excuse his choice--he was sincerely sorry that he'd unknowingly used a word that people consider offensive to name one of the major components of the movie.
But...y'know, outrage works too.
