I've seen one single person do this.

Everyone else is just thrilled over the film. Huh.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-19 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I have seen many people discussing this.

Well, there's the writer of movie who publicly apologized (a real, "Oh crap, I didn't even know, I wish I had, I would've picked something else, I'm very sorry for that" apology, none of that "mistakes were made" crap).

And most discussions or threads.

And F!S, I'm sure it's popped up here a few times.

And then there's also the fact that a lot of people don't even know it's a slur. Especially Americans--not a whole lot of Romany culture around here.

It's nice the writer gave a genuine apology. I'll go look for that statement.

And then there's also the fact that a lot of people don't even know it's a slur. Especially Americans--not a whole lot of Romany culture around here.

My experience is with tumblr (I mostly passed the discussion on FS). I follow some people who would definitely question it, just surprised they didn't.

I might have an idea why some didn't, I just translated it to Norwegian and now I am kinda offended... Somehow I thought Gypsy was a different word...

I hate when that happens...

In my defence my heritage is of Tater which was the Norwegian Romani, and the government basically castrated every single member and took the children away... Which was you know nice, and if you would never use the Norwegian word for Gypsy when referring to them, because an entire group of people was killed off! Did I mention this was AFTER WW2 and up to the fucking 60s? Because yeah that happened, it is rude to refer to a group of people with the wrong name damnit!

/end rant

(To clarify I still enjoy the film, and I understand that not everyone can know everything and yeah there is a letters difference and all that, but still... When I rule the world things will be different)

Oh and I am a tad bit late to the party, so anyho how's life Morieris?

The writer apologising

It's a cool tumblr, he's a pretty cool dude. Even politely told a fan off because the fan was disapointed one of the main character's wife was a model and not a scientist or something
And there's LGBT pilots!

There's a few more posts about it around too, but he doesn't say much on things if he's hoping to have them in the next movie

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know it was a slur.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
It isn't really, just a case of batshit white girl.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
da

I guess it's a slur if you point at someone who fits the ?stereotype? and call them "You gypsy" or use the word gypsy to imply they're somehow bad?

I don't see how having a giant robot named Gipsy Danger save the world could be a slur though.
truxillogical: (Default)

[personal profile] truxillogical 2013-08-20 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
The most blatant way to explain it is, imagine the robot was called "N***** Danger" instead. Perhaps imagine this was a movie made fifty-odd years ago when the n-word was definite a slur, but a lot of people had grown up with it just being "the word you use."

It's an ethnic slur. We don't have the same history with it in America as we do with the n-word, but, well, there's a whole host of ethnic terms that were once considered acceptable that are no longer seen as such. It's not about the robot being a bad representation of the Romany or something silly like that. It's the word itself.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Except nigger doesn't have that same ethnic history as gypsy and it certainly doesn't have as many meanings as the gipsy. Nigger has always been a slur for black people and is commonly known as such. Gypsy is used in community names and for scholarships by the community, it is only used as a slur in some places.

Then we have Gipsy being used here and the for multiple things, it's various vehicles, it's an engine, it's a type of ship, it's a first name and a surname, it's a quite a few of locations, it's a logging occupation, it's a couple of software programs, an animal, a yacht...

What I'm getting at, is it is an ethnic slur when used as such, but it's also a whole bunch of other things - especially when it's not in any way used to refer to the Romany people it's meant to be insulting. Because it's not. Sure, some people were surprised and (some tumblr people were offended but I only saw two romani in there, one okay with it one against it) and the writers apologised for the unintentional insult - but I still do not see how that means the world is, in itself, a "slur" at all times.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of the non-Romani things that are called Gypsy or have Gypsy in the title were named that way in reference to Romani, so saying that those things are divorced from the ethic meaning of the word is disingenuous.

Up until about...fifteen years ago, i'd say, maybe less, i didn't even *know* of another word for Romany - gypsy was the only word i knew. When i was a kid, that just meant - those people who move around a lot. And 100 years ago did it in cool carts with horses, and sometimes they read your Tarot.
truxillogical: (Default)

[personal profile] truxillogical 2013-08-20 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, way less than fifteen for me. Like, five, maybe. It's one of those words that I have a hard time really conceiving of as a slur, because to kid-me, it was just really cool. (Kid me kinda loved Hunchback of Notre Dame and other old stories with gypsy characters--who were never referred to as Romany in those.) But then again, my Dad still occasionally reminds us that when he was in high school and played sports, a particularly well-executed maneuver would be called a "n***** move" (as in, I suppose, black athletes were all so skilled?) and that it was a term of praise that no one in his circle back then would've thought of as offensive, but yeah, not really something anyone would be comfortable saying today.

I wouldn't say "gypsy" in on the same level, again, because of cultural history in America, but it's a word I'd rather be careful with, I suppose.

When i was a kid, i wanted to *be* a gypsy. Or an Indian. I loved the romanticized version of gysies as these people who sang and danced around a bonfire at night, all mandolins and tambourines, and the women all got to wear layers of wonderful skirts with ribbons in their hair and they were all so pretty and dark and magical and they had *horses* and traveled around and were probably part elf or something....

But then, i grew up in the seventies - everything was a little trippy then. *snerk*

Depends where you live.

In some places calling someone a Gypsy is a good way to get in a fight.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
It really does depend where you live, other people are going to just look at you in confusion. Maybe have a vague idea we're talking about...roaming groups of people?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess you need to be European to be aware of the implications of the word.

being called a "gypsy" especially in mid-west and eastern Europe carries the connotation of being a thieving, unhygenic social parasite, who murders, kidnaps and/or rapes children/women. Add to that that these communities were victims of Hitler's ethnic cleansing and that people did not mind too much their sudden disappearance. They were considered to be somewhat sub-human even before Hitler came to power.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but in some places saying anything will get you into a fight, and so will saying nothing. Some places are just fights looking for participants.
