Dear everyone on AO3,

Please stop tagging every single character who makes a 10-second cameo in your 300k epic. It's hard enough to find decent fic about my favourite character without having to wade through all fics that tag her even though she only appears in two paragraphs of the entire story.

Sincerely, an irritated person.

Dear everyone on AO3,

Please also stop tagging your feels about a your story. This isn't tumblr. I don't care about that shit.

Sincerely, another irritated person.

That bastard thing has even spread to the bastion of user-non interactive design FF.net. I never thought I'd have to deal with cameo tag syndrome on The Pit, but there latest "upgrade" has enabled it. The two lead characters field was fine for 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of all fics, now it is the same. Mentioned and they go in one of the new characters fields. Makes their actual improvement of being able to exclude fics with a certain character functionally useless. AO3 is killing fanfic faster than tumblr is.

I agree completely. Some fandoms are worse than others. Or pairings, great this pairing is mentioned but oh wait the girl goes off with another guy in the end!

Dear everyone on AO3,

Do not post drabbles from different fandoms as chapters of one huge fic. Especially not if you've written one 100-word fic for a tiny fandom and you're updating your monstrous drabble assemblage twice a week with your latest thoughts on SuperWhoLock. From the perspective of people in the tiny fandom, you're an irritating spamming tease. I could do without the clutter of Dean/Sam/Sherlock/Bruce/Tony in my tiny fandom's pairing tags, too.

Sincerely, a rage-filled fandom xenophobe.

Oh god, YES.

(Oooh, is this the general AO3 tag complaining post?)

Dear ... a lot of people on tumblr,

Please START tagging m-preg, gender bending, intersex characters and stuff like that again. Not everybode wants to read it, even if it's a common and popular thing in your fandom.

Also, please try to use the normal tags. I swear, I have at least 10 -15 different m-preg tag variations in my AO3 savior list. It's getting silly.

Yes to intersex. I don't mind it, but when reccing fics to people who do, it would make my life easier. As it is, I have to Ctrl+F certain words to try and figure out if it does.

Dear everyone on AO3,

Don't post drabbles as individual stories (even if they are connected as a series. Especially don't post 20 of these drabbles at once. Post that shit in a combined story.

Sincerely, someone who is sick of going through two pages of drabbles.

I know I'm always irritated by general tagging

Dear everyone on AO3,
It's in the best interest of many people that you label explicit stories whether certain characters are top/bottom.

Also if you're going to have a major character death USE AO3'S SPECIFIC TAG and not warn for it in the notes at the bottom of the fic after one has already read said death.

Dear everyone on AO3,

If you do not tag Major Character Death, I hope that every day for the rest of your life, you step on a lego.

Sincerely Kaijin

Dear tag wranglers,

As grateful as I'm am for all your hard work, there's such a thing as over wrangling.
Please stop wrangling together characters of unrelated fandoms just because they have a similar (or not similar at all, I'm still trying to figure how certain two characters got wrangled together) names.

Sincerely, someone who wishes it was possible for find something on AO3.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
A wrangler here. Sometimes things get wrangled together when there's only one of those characters on the archive and then just don't get caught when the unrelated character shows up.

Seriously, if you drop support a line, we should get it pretty quickly and then take care of the problem. :)

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Dear everyone on AO3:

Please don't overdo it on the tags in general. There comes a point where what you're tagging is not at all important - it's not a significant element of the story and as with the characters who only appear in two paragraphs, anyone actually searching for that tag will be disappointed with your fic. Scrolling past really long tag lists is irritating and I know most of them are either cutesy little notes or largely irrelevant so I, and probably a lot of other people, don't even bother reading all of the tags.

Dear AO3 mods;

PLEASE install a function where you can filter OUT certain fandoms when you're searching through a tag. I am sick and tired of seeing 90% Teen Wolf or Supernatural fics whenever I want to browse a tag!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 01:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't "-[fandom]" in "search within results" work for you? Because it's really helped me get rid of all the SPN, Teen Wolf and Sherlock fic when browsing tags.

[personal profile] blunderbuss 2013-08-20 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I ... actually didn't know about that. What exactly do you need to do? Just put in, say, -[Teen Wolf] into that 'search within results' bar?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-20 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

That's really handy for getting rid of certain fandoms, but I still wish they would implement the feature to filter out all crossovers. It's been on the suggestion board for years in one form or another and the current one dates back like 18 months with over two dozen votes. Usually they approve something after only two to four votes and then move it to the in development section. But the crossover filter they just ignore.
