I think one of the reasons that episode was creepy was that Graves didn't just make Data's body do bad things. He made him do embarrassing things. That cringeworthy eulogy, saying arrogant snotty shit to people, being a creep to that girl he was in love with, whining and snarking childishly, etc. Somehow, embarrassing stuff is more visceral than evil stuff.

OTOH, I seriously love that scene at the end where Data wakes up and is politely confused and sweet and perky and babbling and Picard knows immediately that he's back to normal :)
